Manual 4spd Tranny Options
I have a 4spd with a granny gear on my 70 chevy with a 350 and 4barrel carb. the tranny right now is kinda lame for everyday driving and i want a different option without having to get a new driveshaft. i was thinking of getting a saginaw 4spd but i heard that i will need a shorter driveshaft. also i dont care about the location of the shifter really but i dont want it so far back to hit my bench seat. i am totally new to the older trucks. i was into sport compacts since i was 13. so thanks for the help!

I would look at a Muncie M-20 as a possible transmission for your truck. It would fit nicely and it is a strong transmission with a slightly lower first gear than the M-21, M-22.

What do you mean about your present trans shifting lame?Are you refering to it not being good for speed-shifting or is there another problem?These truck 4spds have a tendencey of lasting forever,but they`re not good for racing.They`re more like a 3spd w/an underdrive.
The car-type performance 4spds are great in trucks that mainly cruise and not hauler too often.They are a direct bolt-in when replacing a 3spd/column shift.The M22 has a different spline-count and will require a matching yoke and clutch assembly.The Saginaw Super T10 is also a great choice.These transmissions don`t just swap-in when replacing a truck 4spd.

well i shouldnt have said it is lame but lame for me. i dont do any hauling whatsoever so i want something that is more for everday driving. also something that would be fun to bang through the gears every once in a while!

www.dandltransmission.com has ratio guides and ID info for common car-type 4-speeds. Multiply your rear end ratio by the low-gear ratio and hope for a number around 9.5 or 10, maybe a bit more if you're using tall tires.

well i have to say i dont know anything about transmissions for chevys so no matter what i will probably have to shorten the driveshaft and then change out the x-member? also is the x-member bolt on or welded into place? i am very new to this whole thing so bare with me! i am trying to educate myself on everything little by little!
