what is it for???

THere is a sheet metal piece on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel that sort of looks like a heat shield but is not in the correct spot for one. I always wondered what it was for. I use it to route wiring and fuel lines in between because it hold things like that nicely. Although mine looks like swiss cheese becaseu it looks like the PO emptied a small caliber revolver through it and into the side of the trans case!

Re: what is it for???

Could it be the heat shield from the original catalytic converter? Mine has one, and a matching lip bent into the frame.

The heat shield is on just about all trucks but where I live the trucks did not all have catalytic convertors in those days. It depended on the model and load rating of the vehicle. I agree on the catalytic convertor heat shield discussion.

Re: what is it for???

I know it may sound like a heat shield but it sure doesn't look like one. There is one for the cat convertor on the drivers side underneath the floor board. This one I am talking about is on the passenger side up higher on the transmission tunnel. It is painted body color and wouldn't be big enough for a heat shield.
