just got a 69 custom camper C20 now what

I just picked up a 69 Custom Camper C20. It needs brakes and a master cylinder. It is s 3/4 ton with 8 lug wheels.

Should I:

Do a brake job and keep the drums or convert to disks. I haven't seen a kit for 8 lug 3/4 ton It has Aluminium, American racing rims that are brand new so I really don't want to go 6 or 5 lug unless I have to.

Mark
I put the front disc from a 96 3/4 van under my 69 3/4 camper special. Everything fit fine. I got the complete cross member and swapped the a arms and the spindles as a unit.

Someone has shoes from a company called "Praise Dyno Brake"I believe. They are supposed to make your drums stop like disc's.They also make pads for disc's.Just another option to confuse you more.Hopefully whoever has them will post a link and tell you more about how they like them.

Nice truck! Keep the drums, they should work for whatever you use the truck for.

Re: just got a 69 custom camper C20 now what

the Only, Only thing i have against disc brakes is the probabilty
of increased drag verses drum brakes, My brother who has been drag
racing the same 67 drum brake firebird since 69 says the same thing.
if they had a return spring of some sort like drum brakes do i think they
could truly float, i think if all things were equal ( same truck, same tires,
same driving habits,) i think gas mileage would go down a little with discs.

Very nice truck. life is good.

Re: just got a 69 custom camper C20 now what

Keep it what it is,8-lug.The brakes can be switched to disc at any point using a donor vehicle for low-bucks.I agree, drums work fine. They work on semi rigs hauling serious tonnage. They worked on "everything" for a long time.I think the biggest benefit of discs is ease of service, and they`ll need it.I`ve had more problems with frozen calipers and warped/ground rotors than I`ve ever had problems on drums. To me,disc brakes are a sliced bread type of thing, like electronic ignition, sealed batteries, fuel injection,non-serviceable front bearings...all considered "improvements" in our never-ending quest for a "hassle-free" world.Uh,it ain`t happ'nin'.

Re: just got a 69 custom camper C20 now what

Thanks for all the kind words.

Mark-
Looks like we have the same wheels....and thanks for the info on Napa.

I had to go to Autozone or Advance (I forget which one. When I was in NC they were right next to each other) on the way back from picking it up. It threw a power steering belt and took the fan belt with it. Replaced the the fan belt and drove it 50 miles w/o power steering as the pulleys are off by at least half an inch an and would have thrown the belt again.

Do they have replacement drums too? I am pretty sure I will need them too.

Thumbs up Re: just got a 69 custom camper C20 now what

yes they have the drums. may have to order them, but they are still available
one thing for sure they will ask the size of the shoes, they make to different ones. so you will need to measure the shoe width and drum across. for the front and rears..some had heavy duty and some had light duty..hard to say which one's you got..the rear drums are big money something like 160.00 each
the fronts were 90.00.. make sure you really need them..i would have liked new rear's but after the price thing. i only bought the fronts.

The other way of looking at the drum issue, if you buy them now, while they are still avalible, you'll have them, and at the best price you'll be able to get. It really blows when they are unable to get you drums.
