292 target master?
The 292 in my 1 ton is low mileage. I was cleaning off the valve cover this weekend and it said something like "292 target master , chevrolet parts division". I'm assuming this is a replacement engine. think this was a warranty replacement?

Re: 292 target master?
No way of knowing... replacement engines and warranty engines are the same.
The only thing that would make me thing it was a warranty item, is most people back then would have just had there stuff rebuilt when it was there own dime. |

Re: 292 target master?
By any chance do you know the dress numbers -- the ones behind the distributor hold down?

Re: 292 target master?
'Targetmaster' was a brand name G.M. used in the 80's for a line of new replacement engines sold over the parts counter. They were non-high performance standard car and light truck engines sold at pretty attractive prices as I remember.

Re: 292 target master?
I knew an old guy in the neighborhood I used to live in. He had a 1969 3/4 ton 4x4 Chevrolet. The badges said 350 but it has an in-line 6 in it.
4x,xxx on the clock. I asked what gives with the 6 where it says 350. "That 350 was a dog. At 18,000 miles I took it back to the dealer and had him put in a 292 so I could pull stuff".

Re: 292 target master?
The Target Master line was what we call crate emgines today. Very unlikely it was a warranty replacement. Warranty work would require a short block or engine ordered by exact application part number and it would reuse externals like the valve cover.
My guess would be that some prior owner felt this truck was worth putting a new engine in it. Dad did this to his '77 when it was 9 years old. It still looked like new and the Taget Master price was so close to a rebuid that it just made good sense to put in the new engine and get the warranty. Tom

Re: 292 target master?
You can still get a 292 new from Chevrolet (I don't have the part number handy). They don't list a 292 under the AC Delco rebuilt engines but it was probably available years ago so that may be what you have.
