guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

what a FREAKIN FIASCO this has turned into.
1. DHL lost one of my 31x18.5x15 tires (the will be replacing it come monday since they cant find it now after sending it back to the LOST AND FOUND in ohio)
2. UPS put one of my rims on the wrong truck the day i got the other (that was taken care of the next day)
3. pulled a wheel tonight to check out the new rims and see how they fit. well you guess it THEY DONT because of my finned brake drums. (guy ask me if i had finned drums, i thought i had smooth drums)
4. tried to take a pic of my tire sitting under the truck to atleast give me some incentive to keep going (was gonna make it my background on the computer) and the freakin camera wouldnt take a clear pic even with the flash

so now i have ONE tire, TWO rims, 450$ in the hole and none of it fits

my question is................

do they make a NON-FINNED BRAKE DRUM FOR OUR TRUCKS ----> 71 2wd sb bb w/ 12bolt rear- 5 x 5

thanks
lance

Yes,they do.Wait...maybe not in 5-lug.It might be time for disc brakes on that bad boy. That`s what most steam rollers run anyway.

Can't you redrill a 6 lug drum? It will only be lug centric , but would probably work.

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

OK take it easy. How much of the drum is hitting? If it's around a 1/4 inch you're gonna be ok. I had wheels made for my truck and the drums wouldn't fit inside. If you know someone with a brake lathe have them machine the outside of the drum and bring a wheel to check your fit. Did this to my drums yesterday. They're is plenty of material on these drums. P.M. me if you need more help.

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

from what i seen last night i have WAY more than a 1/4" hitting. looks to me that half the drum would be machined away. im gonna have to a bit more measureing etc. to be 100% for sure but its a no-go from what i can see.

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

ive got the 11.09" brakes ?
did some measureing and
the outside of the drum is 11"+,
backing plate is 12"+
and
overall diamter of the drum on backside is almost 14" .
i have just over 12" inside the rim.
im gonna call the guy that i got the rims from (EARLY WHEEL COMPANY) and ask him if there is anything i can do.
so what size brakes came on these trucks ?

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

Ok,
I had some 14" steel wheels made at stockton wheel and they have a 11" backspace. Now when I went to put them on I freaked cuz the drum stopped just inside the rim. I called stockton and they advised me to machine the drums as I told you. I am working with a 12 bolt rear with 13 1/4" drums so we're on the same page. I hope you can get this squared away and get some pics. Wish we were closer so maybe I could help

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

re-drilling the bolt circle on a 6-lug may work, but I'm not sure. I do know that my 6-lug drums I bought at the local parts house are not finned and they were a lot cheaper than I thought they would be. May be an option for ya.

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

CDowns may be right about the lighter non-finned drums.That`s what I thought I remembered but wasn`t sure if I remembered what I thought or thought what I remembered.I may have forgot what I knew,then knew I forgot,and thought I didn`t know,when I did...know.
I was thinking you may be able to take some meat off of those heavy-duties.
Then,there`s re-drilling the 6-lugs,too.Yes,they are interchangeable.
I say you CAN have a pro-street(that stops).That`s a wide tire,but I still think you need two.Ah jeez,gonna be a wierd day...oiy vey.

the replacement drums I bought for my 5 lug C10 project truck have fins. I picked them up at my local auto parts store.

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

JOE67- can you give me some dimensions on that drum ?
overall diameter front and back ? (i only have 12 5/8" INSIDE my rim from what the guy at early wheel told me)
he told today that alot of guys just shave that lip off the back and they fit fine. he also said i may have a HD 1/2 ton ??
ROBZNOB11- i did see those on ebay but dont know if they will fit my rear. i did see that they had NO fins though.

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

impalas were 5 on 5 and im pretty sure that they are 11x2 i don't think that chevy would put 9.5 drums on there biggest car when you could get 11x2 drums on vertually all models...

Rear diameter is about 13" on my drum. The wheels are on and I don't have time to pull them right now...

I just told the parts guy I had a 1972 C10 2wd pickup and this is what I got

Re: guess im not meant to have a pro-street.......

I hate to say it but I think Early wheel used the wrong size wheel tube for your truck application. There are different sizes for different applications from what my sales rep. at stockton wheel says. I hope you can ge this resolved cause I realize how much money wheels/tires cost.
