Air distribution box, how to fix it?

I'm trying to get the A/C working on my 72 GMC and I noticed that this air distribution box is in need of repair. The door is broke inside of it, where the hinge and door connect. Any ideas on how to fix it? Or where to get a new one. I am considering trying to cut the box in 1/2 at the plastic seam in order to either glue or put 2 pieces of thin metal on each side. I'm not sure how to get the box apart or how to put it back together.

Re: Air distribution box, how to fix it?

I found one that a PO had fixed with a thin sheet of aluminum(about 1/2 inch less in heigth than the flapper is tall and about 4 inches long). It was folded in half and fitted around the shaft tightly and attached with about 4 small machine screws and nuts.

It was a very solid fix. I was going to use it until I found a better one.

Good luck - Bob

Fixed mine by just taking it out and leaving the shaft to work switch. Now I get AC or hot air out of all vents. Works just fine.

I believe those are still available new, but they are pricey.

Re: Air distribution box, how to fix it?

So, will I need to open the box up? I mean cut it in 1/2 at the plastic seam? I would like to try to fix it without cutting the box open. I will make an attempt at it today. Thanks!!

Re: Air distribution box, how to fix it?

The fix I described did not require the box be opened.

Re: Air distribution box, how to fix it?

I fixed this on my truck using 2-ton epoxy. Used the stick I mixed epoxy with to reach inside box so I was able to do it without taking it apart. Works good so far. www.cs-m.com has them for $95 if you need to replace it.

Re: Air distribution box, how to fix it?

I was able to fix it today by using a hot glue gun. I laid it on about 1/8" thick on both sides. Thanks for the help!!
