step bumper tow
I have a step bumper on the rear of my 1980 GMC Sierra Classic with 6 Cy. automatic. the bumper has the tow hitch ball and holes for the hitch chain. Is it safe to tow a 1000 pound boat and trailer with this setup, or should I spring for a new tow hitch??? Thanks much...

Re: step bumper tow
you should be able to. I think the 6 cyl would dictate that more than the hitch FWIW

Re: step bumper tow
x2 You'll be fine with the bumper...you might want to check the condition of the bumper bracket bolts.
If you plan on towing very much, I'd buy a frame hitch (for the tounge height adjustablity and added turning radius if nothing else).

Re: step bumper tow
I thought I read in either my GM info or elsewhere that the capacity of the bumper hitch was only 600 lbs.... but I guess I misread...

Re: step bumper tow
I agree, the 600 should be the tongue weight, I have used my trucks bumper hitch to tow a thunderbird around on a car trailer, the same thunderbird on a tow dolly, and a 2 longbeds on a flatbed car trailer made out of part of the frame from a mobile home.

Re: step bumper tow
I am pretty sure I saw somewhere embedded in a step bumper, that it was good for 3500 lbs trailer weight and 350 tongue weight. I wouldn't worry about a boat trailer, too light to be concerned.
