Applications for 6 lug Brake Rotors

Hey guys,

Getting the itch to start on my burb. First thing I wanted to do was to swap out the 8 lug rear end to a 6 lug rear, possibly a 3.73. Problem is I can't seem to find a 6 lug front rotor. Am I wrong and thinking that there were 6 lug rear ends around? My truck is 5 lug and to be honest the only reason I'm wanting to change to a 6 lug from the 3/4 ton 8 lug that is on it now is because I have some Tahoe wheels lying around. Just want to put them to good use and save a little money on the front end.

Tell me if I'm wrong.

I have a 6-lug, 3.73 rear end in my 4x4. It was originally a 1971 1/2 ton 4x4.

Be careful with the modern 6-lug wheels. I believe the back spacing is way off.

Why not get a heavy duty, 3/4 ton set of front spindles and go with a nice set of 8 lug wheels? The larger rotors in the front will be an upgrade.

I heard 92' c2500 6 luggers will work. This was posted a few months ago.

The 1/2 ton trucks were six lug from 67-70, 71-72 were 5 lug with disk brakes. GM never made a 6 lug rotor back in 67-70, they were all drum. ECE sells a six lug rotor, I have them Expensive though. I wouldn't change your rear end and rotors just to use a set of rims. The ECE Rotors are about $200?? and a good used rear end (unless you get a great deal) will cost about $200. You can get a nice set of rims for that. Plus, the NBS rims don't fit properly on these trucks.... BUT the NBS 8 lugs fit? I think WES has them on his truck.

4 wheel drive trucks were 6 lug in 1971 and 1972 while the 2wds were 5 lug. The front 4x4 rotors are 6 lug. However I doubt the front rotors off of a 4x4 will work with 2wd front end components.

The rears on the 4x4s were 6-lug. I'm guessing ANY 6-lug, originally on a 4x4, rear end will work for what you are doing. Not just 71 and 72. Probably up through 1987. I believe you can swap axel shafts which have the lugs attached. Perhaps somebody has done this and can weigh in.

Don't forget the rims changed in 1971 to fit over the front disk brake calipers. 6-lug rims that came from the factory on a front drum brake truck don't fit on the front axel of a 4x4 but will fit on the rear. Ask me how I know.

Forgot about those... 4WD rotors won't work on a 2wd anyway which is what the pics in his sig show.
