Can't get it in 1st or second

I have a t-5 out of an s-10 and it was working fine. The z bar slipped so the clutch was misligned, but that has been fixed. Now I can not get it into first, second (shifterdoes not move into position) or reverse (grinds the gears) with the engine running. I can put it in gear, start the engine and move, but can not shift. I have adjusted the clutch to both extemes and no luck. I have fluid, the trans has about 3,000 miles on it. I can get it into 3rd and 4th.

Can anybody help me out here?

Re: Can't get it in 1st or second

are you sure the clutch is releasing? Id say make sure the fork isnt broken or something is keeping it from disengaging. I dont understand why it would go into 3rd and 4th unless it was something internal broken. but it sounds to me like the clutch isnt fully coming out. it only has to grab a little to make the main shaft spin and if its turning it will be hard or impossible to put it into reverse or forward unless the truck was moving. just my .02 from diddling with my 3 speed. Hope this helps

After replacing the clutch in my S-10 from m/c to the flywheel it sound like your clutch is not fully disengaging.

Re: Can't get it in 1st or second

I was right there with you, but couldn't figure out why it was not disengaging. Turns out, a piece of the clutch spring had broken and lodged in the clutch/pressure plate assembly, thus not allowing the clutch to move on one side.

So how long can I drive with a broken clutch that seems to be working correctly and what would have caused the spring to break other than manufacturing error? Could the slipping of the z-bar caused this?

Thanks for the help and verification on ideas.
