fuel pump bad???

I have a 72 with the original 350, quadrajet 4 barrel. It will start if you dump gas down the carb, but doesn't stay running. I took the fuel line off and the fuel pump worked, so I changed fuel filters, but still no luck. I was thinking the fuel pump doesn't have enough push left after being connected to the fuel filter, but not sure. Any ideas? thanks

Re: fuel pump bad???

i can check that, but the weird thing is that i drove it 300 miles up to my place and didn't have a drop of trouble. Then I added power steering and it started acting up. i will check the tank filter, though. thanks

Re: fuel pump bad???

If you pulled the line at the carb, and was getting gas to there. Then you may have have a stuck(shut) float in the carb.

Re: fuel pump bad???

I had a very similar problem with my truck, I swapped carbs from a 1bbl to a 4bbl. Before the conversion, the truck ran perfectly, I was getting gas to the carb, the filters were all new and in the correct orientation, fuel in the carb would get it running, and if I kept my foot on the gas it would stay running (albeit badly). I pulled the fuel pump and replaced it, problem solved, if everything else seems to be in order, its a good, inexpensive place to start, worst case its one less thing you will have to replace on the side of the road!
