HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
Everywhere you look for parts you find Pro-Comp, I know that it's a cheaper knockoff of Pro-Form but has anyone used it? Looking to upgrade to HEI and this is dirt cheap, must be to good to be true.... They are sold on other sites for double the price. Should I stick with ACCEL or swap?

I guess for $56.00 I can't complain if it works.

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
Don't know about the Pro Comp but have heard from other folks that Proform sells imported China stuff. I looked for a used HEI in a few junkyards and they're getting scarce around here, believe it or not. Prices ranged from 40 to 100 dollars for a possibly worn out POS. I ended up getting a used one for 40 bucks and found out the mainshaft and bushings are worn. I think you can buy a reman. GM unit for cheap and wish I had gone that route. Live and learn...

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
My truck has been sitting for 8 years so I figured new plugs, wires, coil, cap, rotor..but why keep the points? $75 to upgrade to elctronic insert for points or just go HEI and save the hassle and expense of the coil, cap, electronic upgrade and rotor..... I have to pull the dizzy for a new intake anyway...

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
I bought a new accel HEI, accel wires, new stock coil, and plugs when I first got my truck and it made a huge difference.
I used to work a a hot rod shop and they sold pro-comp and some of the ford ones were bigger then the stock and wouldn't fit.

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
I bought a ProComp hei for the Burb, since the Burb isn't on the road yet I can't comment on reliability but it works and was easy to install. One wire for power and another for tach.
As far as how it looks, it didn't look like a cheap Chinese knockoff, it seemed to be quite well made. As I understood it the ProComp stuff is made in australia. Ron

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
i have bought several pro comp distributors for projects and have installed one in my 1972, seems to be great, the spark is hotter than hell and they look to be very well built, I turned my uncle on to them who builds street rods, he is a die hard just rebuilt the chevy, but after he looked at mine i ordered him one also. Happy so far. i bought one the other day of ebay with a distributor hold down for somehting like 60.00. ridiculous. You cant build them for that.

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
I got a proform china one for 106 + tax with a 50k coil in it. I put a low resistance bushing in it under the coil and run a msd 6al on my new 454 for about 600 mile now and no problems yet.

Re: HEI upgrade - is Pro-Comp junk?
I went to the local junk yard, yanked a dizzy out of a 78 truck, put a new rotor, cap, coil, module, etc etc etc and it has worked flawlessly. Dizzy was 7 bucks, all new parts 50, granted I have a napa employee discount
