Re: 1981 c/10 trans
When I've done it, I always drop the tranny mount and pull out driveshaft to let the tranny come down a bit. Be carefull that it doesn't drop too much cause the motor will also tilt back and the distributor can hit the firewall. Once its tilted down, I use an impact and a long extension, about 2-3 ft to undo the bolts. With it tilted down you should be able to access all the bolts.

Re: 1981 c/10 trans
I use a 3/8 socket and ratchet, with two long extensions and a6" extension between the socket and the ratchet. I can position myself at the rear crossmember and reach the bolts on the bell housing, with ease. I also have taken the top bolts out of the bell housing by sitting on top of the motor and reaching down past the distributor. I pulled the motor out of the truck in less than 3 hours that day.

Re: 1981 c/10 trans
last time I did this I sat on the engine and took off all that I could, the rest were accessed from below without dropping the cross member. Engine was pulled, trans left in the truck.

Re: 1981 c/10 trans
when i pulled mine out, i got the top 2 while i was sitting on top of the motor, and the bottom 4 i got out after i put a jack under the trans and took the crossmember out(driveshaft,tq bolts, etc) and then just dropped it down by lowering the jack

Re: 1981 c/10 trans
a 9/16" swivel socket will do wonders there. I use that, and as many extensions as it takes to loosen everything when you are sitting behind the crossmember. the 9/16" swivel socket will be 10 bucks well spent.
