Bad Temp Sensor??
A recent bout of false overheating from the stock gauge lead me to install an aftermarket temp sensor and gauge which proves all is OK. The stock system was showing hot at the stock gauge. I changed the stock sensor hoping it would cure but now it cycles with the thermostat and almost pegs the gauge dropping to 3/4 and then pegging until the thermostat opens.
Aftermarket gauge with sensor installed at thermostat housing cycles as thermostat opens/closes and never goes beyond 200 degrees. It only hits 200 on the first cycle and the stays around 175-195. Could the replcement sensor be bad? |

I went through the same thing when I replaced my sensor. The one that came with the truck when I bought it never moved much at all so I picked a new one up at oreilly's and it did what yours did. I was in KC one day so I stopped at Chevy Duty and bought one of their sensors and it now works just like it should.
There is a difference in sensors, try another one. Jeff

crustysarge, you running the stock engine? I have this problem with my gauge, turns out the sensors for the newer heads (3/8 threads) have different readings and wont work with stock gauges

when you installed the new sensor you didn't put thread sealer or worse yet teflon tape on it did you??

After I changed the instrument cluster in my K10 I started getting high temp readings. I actualy changed the cluster in Dec and didn't notice the high temps until summer. I changed my electric fan controls and my radiator before I wised up and borrowed an infrared thermometer and realized everything was still running cool. I was going to swap the temp gauges out but should I be looking at a temp sensor instead? If this is the case does anyone have a part# for the correct sensor?
