Long or short water pump?
Sorry if this has been asked before. I have a 72 Chevy short bed 4x4 that I just bought a new crate engine for. It's the 290HP GM Performance motor. I'm needing to buy a water pump for it, but I don't know if I need the short or the long one. I plan to re-use the brackets and pulleys off the old motor, so I want to make sure I get the right pump.
Anybody know which one I need to get? ETA: I don't have the old motor out of the truck yet, which is why I can't take the pump up to the parts store with me.

Re: Long or short water pump?
Look down and see if the inside edge of your WP is in line with the outside edge of your timing cover. If so it's a short, if there is 3/4" or so gap then it's a long one. I believe this is accurate, but not 100% sure. All 3 of the original motors I've got use the short, and the one with an 86 with serp belt uses the longer one.

Re: Long or short water pump?
Cool, man. I kinda figured it'd be the short one, as they seem to be the most popular on the older motors. Thanks for the reply!

Re: Long or short water pump?
The stock pump was short. All trucks used short pumps until '73.

And it turned out the pump I needed was the long one. The current motor must not be the original.

Re: Long or short water pump?
The only way I know on a SBC is this, Short = Drivers side Alt, Long = Passenger side Alt

Re: Long or short water pump?
short shaft was the most comin one found but thay also had the long shaft in some parts are cheaper for the long shaft and easyer to find. in all types the long shaft was more often found in heavy duty applications becouse it moved more coolant then a short shaft could ever hope toi have a short shaft in mine and it is a pain becouse all the pullies i have are from a long shaft it has been a pain but i have them all lined up after 6 months of tinkering. i wasnt going to spend 60 bucks a pully or 100 bucks for a long shaft to fix the problem but yes long shaft is better anyways
