Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

They are one of the best carbs made,IMO.Sounds like you have a sticky choke and maybe sticky linkage.I assume you`ve already checked for interference and ofcourse lubed it.Alot of things can happen in 30 or more years to affect the linkage,as far as bendind, etc.I wonder what we`ll say about all these Edelbrock carbs in 30 years.

they have been mking for about that long now. they were originally a Carter AFB. even factory installed on a few muscle cars IIRC

it sounds like a stuck or mis-adjusted choke stat

lube the linkage, put a little stronger return spring on the carb.

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

I had an old buick with a quadrajet. What I found with it, is that once it is warm and you turn if off, the choke stays open to allow you to start it with no problems. BUT, if you tap the gas pedal, the choke butterfly would close. So, if you are tapping the gas before you try to start it after the engine is warmed up, you may be doing the same thing that mine was doing. I had to learn not to tap the gas (like we usually have to do to start it cold) once the engine is warm.

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

You`re only supposed to tap the pedal once, and only once,to set the choke when engine is cold.

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

when its cold it starts fine its when its hot that i takes forever to start peddle tapping or not which i dont touch the pedal unless i have to, but would rebuilding the carb still help in the overall performence? cause its pretty damn filthy..lol

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

I'm with K on this one ! The fact that it's filthy is also a clue. A sticky choke is going to be at least part of the problem.

These are indeed outstanding quality carbs when they are working properly. But like anything else, when it's wrong.... IT'S REALLY WRONG ! Most people overlook the metering wells when they rebuild them. Apply a thin layer of epoxy or JB-Weld to the exterior of the bottom of the wells and make sure the existing welch plugs don't leak. This is what usually causes them to flood or run rich. As they age the factory sealant dries out and it leaks unmetered raw fuel into the intake through these holes.

The "bog" can be removed by adjusting the accelerator pump stroke and adjusting the rate on the secondary metering rods.

As a matter of trivia ... What other non GM auto manufacturer used the venerable Quadrajet as a factory installed 4 barrel in a performance application ? I'll give you a hint.............it wasn't AMC.

Any ideas ? Dean

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

um now idea but i can tell you i love my quad thay are the hardest to tune right but when tuned right the best performers by far you can get a rebuilt one for 150 from csk rebuild by holley and thay dont do a bad job of it either. i would rebuild or at least pull it off and give it one hell of a cleaning as a quad that is not tuned right can get very dirty in side i had mine on for two months and it was cloging up i had to pull it and clean then i had to try to tune it a secound time it has been 8 months since and i have not had a problem but i was haveing the same problem you were and cleaning it took care of me. a quad if you replace it the only problem the holley rebuilt has is the return spring is way to strong and it will couse the carb to leak after a few months i found out after my truck started to smell like fuel hehehe flame on.

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

ok i have to step in here on the fix or repair daily my 72 ford has been in the famaly since it was new. and it is the only truck i have that has not broken yet.
my 68 gmc is always broken my ford not once it still has the orig belts on it. no car company has made a perfect car or truck but to single out specif one is not cool becouse my ford is the one that takes me to the store to get all the parts for my gmc. hell even my 57 dodge has let me down but the ford running strong since 1972. i just like the sound my gmc makes better

It was used only on the 428 Cobra Jet Engine. Ford used it for only one year and as I recall it was either 1968 or 1969.

By the way, GM wasn't the only manufacturer of the Qjet. Carter made a some for GM although they are fairly rare. My 70 c/10 came from the factory with a Carter Qjet.

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

Man are you close ! Close enough that I'll give you another hint. Ok , we know that it's Ford , used very briefly and in very limited production from 1970-71 model years and in two body styles but only one engine configuration. Now , next guess ?

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

I'd say the Fairlane and the Mustang.

If it was 1970 and 1971, it would have to be the 429 instead of the 428.

Re: quadrajunk i mean jet

PERFECT ! It was used only on the 1970 & 71 Torinos with the 429 Cobra Jet and on the 1971 Mustangs with the 429 Cobra Jet . Of course it was also available on the Mercury sister cars of Montegos and Cougars. Nicely done !
