Changing Timing Chain?

What do I need to know to change the timing chain and gears on my 350? I have the cover off already, and the chain is quite loose. I picked up a double roller/sprocket set, but I want to make sure I know what I'm doing so I don't screw it up. Are there any special tools required? What about precautions? Any help at all would be great. Thanks!

Re: Changing Timing Chain?

get a manual to be sure so its right in front of you, this way you can double ck everything . It is realy simple you already did the hard part . you just need to line up the two dots on the gears so they are in line top (crank gear ) to bottom (cam gear ) and swap the gears and chain out .

Re: Changing Timing Chain?

remember that quality sets will have multiple key ways in the lower gear for 0*, -4*, +4* of timing. you will only want 0/+4* unless your running massive nos/blower. make damn sure you get the marks right on, it can be a severe pain to get them moved just one tooth but you need to be dead on the marks.

Re: Changing Timing Chain?

I think the small gear only has one keyway slot cut in it. What is the best method for getting the old gears off? I haven't tried anything yet. The top one looks like it just unbolts with three bolts, where the bottom looks a bit different. Do I need a gear puller or something?

Re: Changing Timing Chain?

yes you need a puller.

as for putting the new one on, o have always tapped it on with a peice of 1.25" pipe witha cap on it and GENTLE!!!!!!! taps, otherwise get an installer.

Re: Changing Timing Chain?

Would a 3 claw gear puller work to pull them off? Also, is the only specialized tool I need that installer in the above picture?

Re: Changing Timing Chain?

yes the 3 jaw puller will do it...it's only going to be stuck on there a 1/4 or so.
and that installer is a must...
