Stupid Small Engine Q
hey guys, i have a 16 hp tecumseh in my attex sixwheeler. so i was getting it ready for winter and since the ignition key had been shocking me and not turning it off (i had to floor it choked to kill it) i got a new one. i put a wire going into the side of the eingine on the ignition terminal, a wire going to the selenoid to the start terminal, and one from BAT to the battery. and left the accesory terminal empty. now the thing is, if i disconnect the ignition wire it starts and runs fine, but wont turn off. if i connect the ignition wire then it doesnt get spark when the engine is turning over, it just gets spark when the key is in the OFF position? so basically it starts and runs fine, it just wont turn off, unless i connect the ignition wire. so is this wire going into the engine supposed to get 12 volts to turn the enigne off? or is something inside the engine messed up. all the wired in the engine go in this black box (where the magnet is to sense the flywheel. so does anybody have a manual, or know anything about this? there is also a big red wire that is the charge wire, and that is hooked up. but that is all the wires in the engine. so whats up????? thanks!, Ben

That wire that is running into the back of the engine (to the magneto) is to "kill" the spark when it is grounded. My guess is the switch you installed is not the same as the original.

The switch was shocking you because it was'nt grounded properly. When you turn the switch off it should ground the ignition and stop the engine. Check the old switch, I bet it has a GND terminal. It was probably only shocking you when you tried to shut it off, with a bad ground you became the ground .
This diagram is very simple but should help.

wow, thanks a lot for the help. so i need a lawnmower key or somehting. where do i get one? the one i had was for a car, like hot ignition on run and start, but its supposed to be grounded when off and not grounded at start and run huh? thats crazy. theres probably not a way to rig up this new key i got to work huh? is this engine supposed to run with everyhtin disconnected? i started it then unplugged everyhting and it keeps going? i would really like to use this key if possibe (it was 17 dollars, and i already made the hole in the plastic bigger for it to fit) thanks a lot, Ben

the only way to use the "new" switch you got is to see if it has a terminal that is grounded when the key is off, you can do this with a ohm meter. if there is one, wire that terminal to the wire from the "black box". You will have to make sure that the case of the key switch is grounded to the case of the motor, (can use the frame as long as its connected). Your old switch probably had a bad contact between the key switch case, and the frame, that's why you were getting shocked. OR you could rig a toggle switch to the black box wire and to the frame, to kill the motor, would also serve as theft prevention if you hide it. Good luck..
