WIW: posi rear/disc front diffs
Sorry if this is the wrong spot, didn't seem like it should be in classified, or parts for sale, and 4x4 doesn't seem to see much traffic...
Was poking around the salvage yard today, and found a ~'71 4x4 truck with a disc brake front, and a posi rear (assuming the glove box sticker is correct). I was looking to do a swap from my closed knuckle drum front to a newer disc setup, and thought getting the rear as well from the same truck would save some work on matching gear ratios, then got very excited when I saw it listed as posi (so excited I forgot to check it again and count cover bolts). Question is, how much should I pay for it, and would it work anyway without being a total PITA? Also what would you pay for a nice, straight, uncut, rust-free driver door? Thanks in advance for any input, and Josh/Liz/ et al. if this needs to move please do so or let me know.

Re: WIW: posi rear/disc front diffs
I`d offer $250 for the pair,go to $300.If the seller has bigger dreams, tell him you could sink that much into brakes, alone. Not to mention unknown bearing/seal conditions, ball joints,u-joints,and ring & pinion/carrier condition. They ain`t rare and you want`em.He should want your money in his hand.
It won`t be a PITA at all for you.If the drag link is there(arm off of driver`s steering knuckle)get that, too.Chances are it`s adjustable(sleeve in middle)and your`s isn`t. The door...I`d pay $100-up for,if there`s no rust coloring in the corner seems and no even a dot in the outer corners.I`d go alot more, even,if they are that clean.A stripped door is worth $75,a repro is $250+.Those you need to do alot of work to install the windows and workings. So,you`re always ahead on a complete door. But,I would hold my spending below $175.

Re: WIW: posi rear/disc front diffs
make sure you get the spring plates too! I believe the axle tube on your 67 is going to be a smaller diameter than the tube on the 71, get the spring plates and the u-bolts/hardware if you don't feel like having new bent up for you......this is a lesson I learned the hardway, I believe the older D44's have a 2-3/4" axle tube, and the newer ones (71+) have 3-1/4" tubes.

Re: WIW: posi rear/disc front diffs
Thanks guys! He wanted $200 for the door, which I thought was a little high, but not undo-able. Mine is in good shape, but carved for a speaker (I think they used a butter knife).
He's quoting $700 for the axles (300 front, 400 rear)! I thought that seemed insane, but don't have a previous experience with them to justify telling him to pound sand.

I'd say those prices are right on...not a steal, but what they are really worth. That is what they would sell for around here.

Re: WIW: posi rear/disc front diffs
Doors around here are $100-300. Some people here would pay more for a good orignal door than new repo..the $300 range I'm talkin.. Diffs,,typically 300 for a front 1/2 ton version...3/4 ton sell for more...diff with posi rear.,again $300. I'm talking Canadian $ but it aint much different right now..only about 12%.

Meathead- Maybe I'll come visit!
Smiity-Exactly what I was thinking, maybe I'll offer $750 for the whole shebang, and haggle from there.

Jees, I think I just sold Dana60 front/70 rear from a 90 dually for $800. 3/4 ton axles are a dime a dozen, that guy must think his stuff is gold or something.

Re: WIW: posi rear/disc front diffs
I did a disc swap on my 67 1/2. All I did was use 73-up disc 4x4 set from the steering knuckles out and removed the same from the 67 front end. It all bolted up like it was factory. Saved some money by using the closed knuckle factory 67 axle but with better braking. I am in the process of restoring this truck so issues concerning the strength of the closed knuckles wasn't an issue
