Inline guys...Clearance problems:Air cleaner vs. Brake booster

I got a 250 in this K-20 I am working on..........Just like alot of other trucks we had over the years, only problem is this one has a power brake booster on it. Granted I am going to be running a small 4brl Carb on this beast, and the larger stock air cleaner housing isn't going to fit that I has planned on using from a SBC..............BUT, after looking at our C-10 with the stock carb, intake and exhaust, it doesn't look like the stock housing would clear the booster either from what I can see. Does anyone have a picture of a inline with a booster and stock air cleaner setup? I really wanted to run a stock looking setup, although bigger to feed the engine improvements and carb. I thought about taking a stock 6 cleaner and enlarging the center hole and running that.............But that still leaves a small element inside, and heck it doesn't look like it would fit anyhow. Anyone know of a fix beside the lousy looking element sitting on the carb?

This is the stock 1bbl unit. If you locate one, make sure it comes complete with the support brace, etc.

Re: Inline guys...Clearance problems:Air cleaner vs. Brake booster

Wonder how wise it would be to make something similar to that, except the air cleaner housing from the SB would sit on the cross over? I can see it wouldn't work with a 292, but the smaller 250 it might?

Only problem would be flow issues, but I imagine with a 14" air cleaner in it, and a 4brl, all on a little 250, it wouldn't be a huge problem

Notice on cpne's pics there is a fan shroud on that 292, not just the little metal fan guard. That is a real cooling improvement if you are having any heating problems.
A small aftermarket air cleaner will work if you don't care about the stock look. If you run an oval, you can get more filtering area.
If you need a 4bbl Offy intake, I also have a real nice one on the parts board for sale.

Re: Inline guys...Clearance problems:Air cleaner vs. Brake booster

I would think with a setup similar to stock, you are going to work backwards from the whole point around more filtering area. I put a 4bbl on my 250 a while back, if you are running a k20 booster, be aware that there isn't much clearance between the body of the carb and the booster itself. The idea I came up with (but have yet to impliment), was using one of those cold air intake kits for a TBI engine, It should attach right to a 4bbl without any problems, and you don't have the narrow restriction of the stock 250/pb air cleaner.....only issue with that is colder air is going to cause an I6 to lug even more on start up.

For more on intake heat, check out inliners.org, under the tech-tips there is a good article explaining the issue.

something like this for the intake, the pipe is on the right side for clearance on a 250 with pb. setup.

Re: Inline guys...Clearance problems:Air cleaner vs. Brake booster

p.s. I found the install was "easier" if you installed the carb and intake as a unit, I personally could not get the body of the carb onto the intake and past the booster, I put a few small scuffs on the booster. Once installed I only had 1/4" from the body of the carb and the outer most edge of the booster.

Clearance tight between 4bbl & booster? Look at the pics again and you will see the smaller DD booster that has much better clearance...stops better, too!

Re: Inline guys...Clearance problems:Air cleaner vs. Brake booster

Thanks guys.............I don't really want to run a aftermarket cleaner on a base like I said earlier, I want to keep this stock, except for the engine mod's internally and like I said, the intake and exhaust, and even that I want to make it look like it could have been on there in '72. I did some hunting in the steel/alum. pile today and I found some box tubing that will work, and I adapt it to a base which I'll mount on top of the valve cover like a stocker, and over to a piece of tubing which I will have the box tubing curve into.

Pickmup, what do you want for the offy? I just bought a Clifford, but I might want another one for a "Future" project. And yes, I got a fan shroud for this one May need it
