Vin Id

Hi. I have a new truck...(pics in Welcome board - "Newbie from Utah" post) and I also have a LMC truck catalog...I am deciphering my VIN

CKE142S

C is conventional and K is 4x4. Why do I have both letters?

E checks out
1 checks out

4...this is supposed to be a 4 or 34. 4 being stepside and 34 being fleetside. This does not check...it is a fleetside.

S is St Louis...good for St Louie

I am bit confused...any cryprographers out there?

Cheers,

Tim

Re: Vin Id

First and formost, welcome to the board.
Second... LMC sucks. If you buy there stuff, and end up with some one eose's stuff (common) you'll know what I'm talking about. There VIN info os wrong too.
here is a decoder that is dead ohn right. (happens to be on this site) http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html
The only thing it is missing, is one of the things you are confused about... your extra C.
in 72, ALL chevy truks had that extra C. A 2 wheel v8 woulda been CCE******* GMC trucks recieved a T.
Now for the 4. This is another thing where LMC is wrong, but, you'll find many MANY online VIN decoders are wrong too.
On the VIN, 4 means cab and bed. Makes no mention of WHAT bed. The MODEL number, 4 is stepside, and 34 is fleet side.

side note, LMC's longhorn info is wrong too. But that's OK, everyone else's is too.

Re: Vin Id

Thanks for the tip on LMC. But f it is common for everyone to sell someone else's stuf...where does someone else sell it...so I can cut out the middle man?

Why else does LMC suck...do they have bad customer service?

Cheers,

Tim

Re: Vin Id

there customer sevice is next to nonexistant. You call with a question, if they can't tell by looking at the picture in the magizine, or by the description, then they'll call you back tomorow with a less than satisfying answer.
Back before I discovered the internet, LMC was all I was aware of... and every single time I ordered, they screwed it up. These days, I normally buy from ppl on here, e-bay, or junk yards. But that's only becouse I don't have the fundage to buy new stuff. If I did, it would be from Wes at classicheartbeat, or GMCpauls, or ricks ...
Here is a link to a stickey that mentions the ones who pay to help support the board. There is a link on this link to a page that has more vendors.

LMC makes a cool book, and yes, there blow up pics are pretty invaluable. However, you can get better service, better prices, and WAY better support elsewhere.

Re: Vin Id

Thanks for that message. Very invaluable. I have 12,000 budgeted over the next 12 months to get this baby into shape...this does not include a paint job but will most likely be body works.

Mechanical is my main thrust right now.

Cheers,

Tim
