Silly request - Woodgrain bezel overlay - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys...Some of you may know that I am wanting to smooth out the rough finish of my bezel, the part that is black. I have debated sanding it, filing it with high build primer or a self leveling epoxy. I think Longhorn Man has suggested getting the woodgrail overlay and painting it. I think instead of ruining a woodgrail overlay, I could just use it as a pattern. I would go to Home Depot and get some thin lexan and use the woodgrain overlay as a pattern, then paint the lexan the color of my truck. I can use an epoxy to adhere it to the bezel (thought of double sided 3M red tape, but it would be too thick). I would make sure it fit perfectly before assembling it as not to ruin my bezel if it is not a perfect fit.

SO, anyone have an old woodgrain bezel OR a template that they had made that I could get from them or know where I can get one inexpensively?

Instead of buying one for a pattern, make your own pattern. You put tissue paper over the bezel and use a lead pencil to make a rubbing of it. Cut out the tissue and test the fit. Adjust as necessary and wah law, a pattern. I've done this for making gaskets.

Mike, I have used duct tape in the past. Overlap the strips for strength. Use an x-acto to trim the edge and holes. When you are done, it will peel off and stay together!. I have done it before a few times and it's easy to do. Good luck!

Thanks guys for the ideas. I have a bunch of different sized transfer tape that I use with my vinyl plotter. I used a single sheet of 11" tape and it worked pretty well to cover it. I then traced it out and wil pick up some lexan tonight and give it a try.

I'd think the lexan would be more expensive, and too thick. Let us know how it works out.

BTW- If you do use Lexan make sure that's what you buy. There is a big difference between Lexan and Plexi-Glas

10/4! I work with Lexan all the time and you are right, there is a big difference between the two. My Home Depot (or at least the one I consider mine as I have paid enough to them to fund their new expansion) has several different thickness choices. I am going to go with the thinnest piece I can get. I am also debating on painting the inside so the lexan would act as the clear coat (just like the RC Car Bodies I paint).

I'll let you guys know how I make out.

I`m going to a crafts store and getting Decoupage.It`s resin that flows to level.Like on a bar where they have coins or pictures encapsuled under the finish.It will flow to the bezels and dry smooth and flat.You could paint first or on top of it.I`m going to paint over it.
