Re: removing column shifter?
To pull the shift lever off you need to use a nail or puch and hammer the pin out. To make it look like a standard shift column, grind off the shift lever mount even with the column and fill it with JB Weld (or similar), sand it down, prime it, add polyester finish putty as needed, (Marsons 2k is my favorite but evercoat works just as well) and paint. I have done this to old Chevelle's and Nova's in the past and you cannot tell the difference.
As far as the linkage goes, just unbolt it all. Oh yeah, you'll also need to run a jumper or splice together the neutral safety switch located on the top of the column, under the dash near the firewall. On most of mine I just made a male to male jumper wire and plugged it in to complete the circuit.
