Most of us will go a long way to protect and preserve whatever we can, especially if it's an older vehicle or a nice ride. One of my favorite engine bay fire tactics is to kneel down beside the car first thing and shove the nozzle up under the wheel house. This will quickly dampen the fire and you can take your time about opening the hood and mopping up . Unfortunately on a lot of older rigs like ours, there's a steel inner wheelhouse that doesn't melt away and give us access. By the way, don't try this on your own as a good samaritan with a fire extinguisher . It's usually hot as hell and an exploding tire will make you crap yourself. Cooling the environment is the key and an extinguisher won't cool near as quickly as a 1.75 inch attack line.

One last comment about car fires. If you are ever unfortunate enough to experience one or if you come upon one in your travels... stay away from directly in front of and behind the burning vehicle. Impact absorbing bumpers typically use small shock absorbers that will explode under these conditions and turn a bumper into a missile. That can yield in a nasty little experience for all involved. Approach the vehicle at a 45 degree angle to minimze this risk.

That shiny aluminum tape the HVAC guys use is awesome, 10X better than duct tape, and once you stick it, it's permanent! Just apply the tape, paint with your favorite krylon color and your done! I saw a '70 Chev PU for sale last weekend that was at least 25% aluminum tape and krylon! All four rusty and pitted fenders were adorned with this beautiful armor...

you're tellin me! I already watched one of my old rigs burn down...but it was my brother's car which he gave to me, and I sold it an hour before it happened. Here's a picture of the car, from my phone, so excuse the low quality of it.
