I am trying to replace an engine that threw a rod, I was trying to leave the tranny in the truck so it would be less work, but since it broke the rod, the rod is kinda jammed between the crank shaft and the piston cylinder so the fly wheel won't turn which means I can't get the bolts connecting to the torque converter off. Is there another way to get the engine out without having to take it out as a unit engine+tranny, or am I going to have to bite the bullet and do it that way?

Looks like you will have to pull them together. Unless you want to attempt to unbolt the tranny from the block and slide the tranny off of the converter and make one heck of a mess.

Can you rotate the engine in a reverse direction and break it free? It is hard to picture a rod jamming so tight that the motor would just LOCK UP. Can you imagine the damage that a motor turning 2000 RPM or better would make if it just all of a sudden stpped. The torque would tear the motor out of the engine beay and damage a lot of sheetmetal. I am betting that it will turn, maybe not easily, but it will turnover. If it is locked up, can oyu jack the motor up and pull the pan off and use a liquid thermal adjusting wrench to shorten the rod?

LMAO, i like that. Liquid Thermal Adjusting Wrench. Never heard that before, but i am assuming you mean plasma cutter? One thing I have had work before when i got a motor with a bolt dropped into a cylinder and then spun over (I didn't know that was why it was locked, just assumed it was a broken rod or badly spun bearing) is drop the pan and loosen the main cap bolts and then jack the block up slightly and the crank will turn easier.

Yeah a "Liquid Thermal adjusting wrench" US Country boys grew up with these things---some of you know them as acetylene torches. I have seen guys take them and go to a fine small cutting tip and beat a plasma cutter in quality of a cut, not tomention cost of buying one.. It is all in the experience. The motor is trashed and you are going to open it up anyways, so slice and dice.
