idle too high
i recently got a new carb, got it running fine after some work, except for the fact that it idles around 900rpm, and that is really annoying...i turned down the idle screw and it doesnt really do much...but i found if i just pull back on the throttle arm a little it will idle where its supposed to...now it has a return spring on there, and it seems tight, but i was wondering if maybe i could get a new one and it would fix it? or do you think its something else?

If it's a quadrajet, there are actually 2 idle screws. I know there's one up by the front of the carb, and the other is somewhere down towards the bottom....I know it doesn't help a whole lot....but at least you know it's there now...
Good luck, TJ

Well, my only guess now, would be that your choke is on just a hair, and the carb is stuck on the high idle cam. There's a screw under the throttle arm to adjust that, have a look, and try to maybe turn it out a hair....
Good Luck, TJ

which way would i want to adjust the linkage? like make it shorter or longer?...and that screw, ive tried that one before, but the arm doesnt quite make it to touching it....like something is holding it away from the screw

Also check for a vaccum leak, this would give you a unwanted fast idle. Spray the area with some carb clean or w-d40 while the engine is running, when you hear the engine rpms change you've found a leak.
