Stiff Ride
One question I have about my 68 is that the ride seems very stiff, I mean this thing feels all the cracks in the road. Is there any products, mounting bushings that can dampen the ride???

What kind of truck do you have? Is it a Chevy or GMC? C-10, C-20??? 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? Is the rear suspension coil spring or leaf spring? More info would be very helpful

2wd chevy c10 camper edition. Used to have a cmaper attached so now all it is is a longbed. It has coils in the front and rear along with helper leafs in the rear.

i'd say chances are good that it drives like a 35year old truck
you can probabally get yourself a nice air ride suspension for it in the $5000-$8ooo range for a complete installed package

Would LMC Truck be the best spot to look for new bushings/body mounts?? I am new to the world of chevy restoration and am wondering if this would be the best parts catalog.

No most of LMC's stuff is overpriced and oh lesser quality than stuff you can get from local or board vendors. If there is no one in your area that sells quality restoration parts talk to one of the board vendors, don't know which is best, haven't bought anything from them yet but if there is one that is fairly close to you that is who I would go with save some green on shipping.

mother truckers ha always gave me a good deal. you could loose those helper leafs that will help a bunch. and change out the norms like shocks and so on. if you want a better ride , step up to a a-arm package off a 73 up 1/2 ton these offered rubber bushings as opposed to your stock metal ones, oh yea maby your cab mounts are wore out too, and trailing arm bushings...have fun

SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, & I'M JUST GOING BY MY MEMORY HERE. I DON'T THINK THE AUXILLARY OR HELPER LEAVE SPRING ON A COIL SPRUNG TRUCK DO ANYTHING BUT ADD WEIGHT, UNTIL THE TRUCKS IS LOADED TO THE POINT OF THE HELPER SPRINGS COMING INTO CONTACT WITH SOMETHING. Hey John, here's a picture of one. It looks like it should typically not touch until a load is applied. I've never driven a truck with helper springs before though, so I don't know.

What about tires and shocks?It needs bushings if you are getting jarring and clunking.The helper leafs are a progressive rate spring that only comes into play once enough weight is loaded.And,yes,they did offer CustomCamper equipment on 1/2Ts.There were CustomCamper/10 badged trucks,even.

check your tire pressure.........if they put heavy duty style truck tires on there they might have put them at max pressure...........maybe......., the cheapest and easiest to start your list

some of the 1/2 ton trucks did come with a 3/4 ton spring. those trucks ride hard. if you switch the springs to a progressive rate spring which will cost you about 100 bucks a pair it will ride a ton better. bushings arent going to make much difference in the truck hitting hard. stiff springs are the biggest factor in these trucks riding harsh.

so where would you say has the best quality parts? Year one? Ive noticed that LMC has all the stuff for my renovation however, hearing what people are saying that most of the stuff is made over seas and isnt of the best quality. Buy USA!!

Leaf spring trucks ride rough, it is just a fact. 1/2Ts are firm, 3/4Ts are stiff and camper specials are hard as a rock. The shocks don't do much unless you have a heavy load, because the springs are so stiff.
I drive a 3/4T BB 71 camper spl and empty you can't go down the road and adjust the radio! It was even worse with bias camper tires...radials helped. You can go to Home Depot and get a pallet full of concrete blocks, though, and it won't even squat. If your body bushings are split and deteriorated, replace them to straighten out the cab, but it won't ride any better. |
