Re: Disk brake conversion

I don’t have a step by step, but I can probably find a few of the 88 suburban complete crossmember swap.

Re: Disk brake conversion

What you want to do? Entire crossmember swap?, kit?, spindle only swap?
The easiest/cheapest is probably going to be the crossmember out of a 73 up.

Re: Disk brake conversion

I’m not sure. I am not a heavy duty mechanic but should be capable of doing this. I guess I am looking for the easiest way to do it. I would like to keep the stock look of 6 lug and height and was also going to start looking for a kit that would supply everything I would need to get this done. Also any suggestions on where I could get a full kit would be great.

Re: Disk brake conversion

I would do the full crossmember or a kit for sure. I pieced mine together w/ 71-2 spindles, discs, calipers, ball joints, tie rod adapters, etc. etc. etc. Junk yard here, auto parts there....

Major PITA.

Re: Disk brake conversion

I had the 88 suburban laying around with a blown rear end. I used a bunch of parts from it including the engine. With the price of gas, I've seen several late 80's, early 90's subs around in the $1000 range. I even used the brake lines and proportioning valve, steering box and hoses… Saved me a bunch of money on small parts like bolts, screws, and some wires and on and on…

Re: Disk brake conversion

everything from a later model will bolt to your orginal crossmember, I have done the swaps both ways and other than being able to drop the oil pan with clearance with the later model crossmember, it is a pain. The only real advice i can offer is when you do the swap, with or with out the crossmember try to use the complete front end, spindles, a arms, P/S box etc for convienence sake, that way you know what year all the parts are and no swapping problems with different tie rod ends etc.
Plus not sure when it started but i know that from 86 up they had wider front rotors like the ones offered on the heavy half tons from the 70's and using a 5 lug rear from a 71 I also used the wider rear brakes, backing plates out from the 86

Re: Disk brake conversion

The kit I got form GMC Pauls uses the stock '69 ball joints and tie rods. So keeping parts straight is easier. I like the idea of the later model stuff, but my drick is more of a cruiser than a performance machine.

I have a hard enough time now getting what I need at the parts store without multiple trips or brining the old part with me.

Re: Disk brake conversion

The benifit other than thicker rotors with the later model stuff 73-up is that the price of parts is cheaper and the rubber control arm bushings that give you a slightly better ride

Re: Disk brake conversion

I put a crossmember from an 84 c-10 with a 6.2 diesel

that stuff is heavy duty to the max and the tie rod ends of my 69 which were new fit right in.

my truck should be pretty stought in the front with all poly bushing

hard core in the back with poly, 3/4 ton hd springs and the helper leafs.

I cant wait to put in a locker and put big boats out of the water with a 1/2 ton 69
