How much would you guess these trucks are worth?

Magazine coverage can affect the price, but there are exceptions to every rule. This truck was on the cover of Truckin' magazine (I know its not a 67-72, but bear with me), I know that he had around 100k into it, and from what I understand it sold a couple of months ago for around 25k. Basically what I am saying is that you just never know. On a side note, the original owner of this truck is starting on a 70 chevy with a 67 front end. I saw the rendering he had, it'll be just as nice as these two.

Personally, I don't care what mine is worth (except for insurance reasons) because I will never sell the ones I have now. I sold my 68 when I was in the ARMY and have regretted it since.

the really nice blue truck is in texas. I talked to the new owner, he had just bought the truck from the two guys who built it together. It had just come out in the magazine i think classic trucks i do not remember which magazine. I am sitting at a little bitty truck show and here comes the blue truck. I had the magazine in my truck on the seat. The men built it for around 75k. They gave him all the reciepts when he bought the truck. The new owner told me he had just sold something else he had and bought the blue truck for thirty eight thousand five hundred dollars. He drove it to the show from where he lived which was about 45 minutes away and was scared every second that he would get a rock chip or something would happen to it. This is what he told me. later

The last real stereo I worked on with my brother had a total bill of $125k. That did not include the truck price or the custom work done to the truck outside of the stereo. The truck won 17 straight first places and 8 best of shows the first year, went to IASCA Nationals and won 1000 watt unlimited consumer class, plus set a new SPL record (before the days of 90db rules and db drags). It was featured in Truckin' and Auto Sound and Security, then sold for $35k.

The $125k stereo worked out to include $50k of labor. It was an incredible truck and won everything it was entered in. But there is no way it would have ever sold for that price.

If you buy a chopper from West Coast Choppers, you will pay $75k+ for a $30k bike basted on name alone. I don't know of many people who have that level of pull when it coomes to our trucks. A few guy's on this board should, however.

Show trucks.The point behind trucks done to this level is to show(and win trophies) with them.Many of the cars Roth and Starbird built in the 60',70's were slightly less detailed but unique in design.They were built to impress people with the design and execution.Style is a fickle thing.This years $6,000.00 designer dress is probably not going to wear well next year.But it may be the hit of the show today.As show vehicles age they lose their appeal because of being last years style.Even "rat rods" are a nostalgia type style.So at the height of the popularity of these show trucks they may be worth $60-70,00.00 but after the style fades a bit they will be drivers for around$30,000.00 and then wear and tear will lower their worth even more.

I'm a licensed real estate Appraiser, and definitely don't want to get "preachy" on this subject, but: what you say concerning our trucks (personal property) appraisals is exactly true for real property (real estate) appraisals, too. I don't do personal property appraisals, but a lot of things work just the same way.......

Cost has very little to do with Value, though it is used as one of the Approaches to Value Estimation (how you get to the final appraisal conclusion). New Cost (replacement - or "insurance value") almost ALWAYS over-estimates Value on houses. In a normal market (not during a time of foolish inflation & speculation), they won't bring, when offered for sale on an open market, what it would cost you to rebuild them.

Further, these trucks have had what is known as a serious amount of "over-improvement" done to them, carrying the cost to reproduce them way "above the market." It's like the guy who spends $ 100,000 for a new custom swimming pool at his house in a $ 150,000 residential neighborhood. Sort of stupid, if you're looking for top-dollar return on investment.

It may have cost that much to do, but you'll just never get it all back. That's "the market."

That's also the "labor of love" thing. Very easy to spend too much.

One of my appraisal instructors used to say:

"It IS what IT IS --- meaning: what it's really worth is defined by: WHAT it is, WHERE it is(location-location-location), HOW it is (condition), WHEN it is (now - not next year or last year), WHY it is (being sold - motivations: fire sale - or not motivated at all, etc), and WHO it is (both selling it & buying it - motivations again)."

One of my other instructors (I liked him a lot better) used to say: "No matter how hard you polish a t*rd, it's still just a _____."

All pretty similar rules to everything related to our current discussion......
