GM did not put overdrive trannys in truck until '82 in limited quantities. The OD 700R4 became a popular option in '83. I love my rebuilt 700r4.

1 gear 3.06:1
2 1.63:1
3 1:1
4 0.70:1

A 700R4 can easily put in older trucks too. '91 700R4 were the best stock built trannys. Any 88+ would make a good replacement tranny. Earlier models had problems. Especially the 82-84 models.
