what engine do I have?
65 model, swb fleet side I know its a six cyclinder, but is it a 230?
any markings to look for? thx |

in 65 they had 2 six cylinder options...............the 230 and the 292..........hemmit

It is probably a 230. There are some different numbers on the passenger side of the block. First is part of the vin, which is stamped in a machined flat at the base of the distributor. That number can be decoded, but I don't have the book.
Next is the casting number, usually 7 digits in large raised letters. Usually located in the center of the block. You can look up the casting number at www.inliners.org . The casting date code is usually above the starter. There you should find a series of letters & numbers. It will look like CON 2 C24 5. Decoding this is fairly simple. The CON 2 means conveyer 2, tells where the block was cast, but doesn't concern us. The C24 5 is the date code. Letter is the month, Jan =A, Feb = B,... Next is the day of the month, followed by the last digit of the year. So C24 5 would be March 24 with a year of 1965, 1975 or 1985. Combine the year possibilites with the casting number and you can usually determine the engine from the tables at inliners.org. You can also check the casting number on the head, located inside the valve cover. These are listed at http://www.butlers-a1.com/chevym.htm which is linked at inliners. If all you're concerned about is whether the engine is a 230 or 292, the blocks are different. THe lifter covers on the 230/250 (low deck or LD) are 4" tall, the 292 (Tall deck or TD) covers are 6". Also the LD block has engine mounts directly opposite each other, the TD block has the right mount moved forward, swapping places with the distributor.

Look behind the distributor for the numbers on the block..........the last two letters identify the displacement..............TA=230 W/ 3 Speed TE=230 W/Powerglide TG=230 W/4 Speed UH=292 W/Manual Trans UT=292 W/Powerglide.................Hope this helps identify your motor...............Hemmit
