Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
Well, I've decided that building a house is more important than building a truck. I want to know if it's better to part the truck out or try to sell as is? It's completely disassembled!!! I'm going to get the rockers/cab corners replaced and was thinking about buying a new front end rebuild kit, but what do yall think, should I just part it out on ebay or something? I have about 1500 in it as of right now?
To the mods: Please don't delete this post, I'm asking an opinion, not trying to sell it on the forums. |

it all depends on what you have, the condition of every piece, how much is new, how much is desirable ...and so on and so on.
Look in your garage at your pile of parts, and figure what you could get out of the desirable, and then all the junk parts would be practicly given away. |

Re: Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
Well, that's what I was wondering about? Nothing's new. It's a 71, short step. All the original frame pieces, that I haven't thrown away, are in great shape! I was going to blast and prime/paint the frame, x-member, panhard bar, control arms and trailing arms. Was going to buy urethane bushings for the rear arms, panhard bar and cab. Completely rebuild the front end, including a lowered sway bar from ECE and also buy a rear sway bar. Buy new calipers and rotors for the front end, but leave the rear with nothing, in case someone wanted to add disc to the rear later on. Adding a Blazer tank in the rear. Was going to drop the front with 2.5" spindles, replace stock height front springs and add 4" rear drop springs, along with new shocks all around. Mount the cab back to the frame and blast and prime it, with urethane primer. Welding in 2 new outer/inner rocker panels and one cab corner. Shave the hole where the factory gas tank was, as well as thinking about smoothing the firewall. Thinking about buying new wood for the bed and SS strips. Was going to buy new core support, V8 conversion kit and 350th auto x-member. Then, all someone would have to do is add engine, tranny, new gears and whatever color they wanted to paint it. If I were to do that, would it bring anything close to what all those parts cost? And I would just miss out on the 1500 I've already wasted? I can provide pic or what everything looks like now, if needed?

putting money into an incomplete project is mostly a waste of time and money nobody is going to pay you for your time and even less will pay you for your dreams and intentions// doing what you're suggesting you'll end up with a roller project that you can sell on ebay for $500-$1000 if you're lucky

That's what I was afraid of. Well, if I sell it complete, should I just put stock springs and spindles on it and try to sell or would you suggest I try to sell as is?

Re: Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
Put the parts you have together as a "rolling" short step ... it's gonna bring more money as roller than it will in peices.
Remember the bed parts I sold you? Had it been an assembled bed, you wouldn't have gotten it as cheap as you did. Complete assembled short steps will fetch $500-$1000 (in the same condition the disassembled parts you got). Good Luck ... sorry to see you change your mind, but I understand completely. Shane, I was thinking about fixin' the bed up and selling it on ebay, then fixin' the truck to "rolling" status and trying to sell it on ebay. I may still do that. If I do fix the bed, should I get new would and strips too and the bed slats? (sp?)

Re: Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
well i personally think you'll getALOT more for the pieces / by selling locally thru local pennysaver also free ads on craigs list in areas that are within a 100mile radius and or a local swapmeet// i'm afraid tho alot of stuff will have no value PERIOD especially the cab, my personal feeling is ebay is good for things that are smaller than a breadbox all the large things are just asking for a nightmare for the hassels of shipping// FORGET SPENDING ANYMORE MONEY ON IT PERIOD !! ,you just wont get it back // if you have time and want to make money off your time the best way is to get a job at mcdonalds or wallyworld cause you aint going to make anything for your time on an old rusty truck

What the hell does that mean? Secondly, nobody around wants to pay for anything. I've sold many things on ebay before, cars, trucks and even antique tractors.

I wish I had a dollar for every dollar I've lost on my projects, Unless your name is Boyd, Troy, or Chip you should forget about making money on a project vehicle, it shouldn't be about the money anyway, I do it because I love the vehicles. I was in the position of having to sell a vehicle in pieces because of a financial problem and also because the vehicle had just been sitting for too long, my out look on the situation was, I would be glad to sell the vehicle cheaply to someone who has full intentions (and the ability) of finishing it.

Re: Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
You get more money for parts than whole, but its a lot more effort to sell it piecemeal. Its easier to sell it as a lot and take the beating financially.
If you can sort of get it whole its going to get more money than apart. If it looks like junk, it will sell as such. If it were me, I'd sell the lot and take the lesson. I have done this a few times, but seem to be not learning the lesson.

Re: Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
~ Jason: Simmer down bro.
I don't think anyone meant anything personal or insulting, they were just telling you how it really is. You did, afterall, ask for opinions and that's what you got. cdowns is a straight shooter and isn't one to sugar-coat things, much like myself. I know it has gotten me in hot water on more than one occasion and most times it was because someone took what I had written the wrong way. You have to decide for yourself what is best for YOU. None of us here can tell you how, why or when you should sell your truck. Whether it be in peices or as a whole. ~ Everyone else: Around here (locally-where Jason & I live) salvage yards still have a pretty decent supply of things such as hoods, fenders, cabs, etc. that are still usable, for the most part. Peices don't sell for jack around here, whereas a SWB "roller" (less motor - tranny) can bring decent change if the assembled "peices" are in pretty decent shape. Thus the reason for me telling him to sell the truck whole. It would also only be ONE headache to get rid of it as a whole truck/roller, as opposed to MULTIPLE headaches if he parts it out. Less money? Probably. But he can get whatever it will bring and move on. Not meant to "stir the pot" ... only clarifying why I posted as I did. Last edited by Shane; 09-30-2006 at 11:48 PM. |

Look pal, I didn't yell at you or the other old man, so don't do it to me. And yes, I asked for an opinion about keeping it as is or putting it back together and trying to sell it. I didn't say I have ****loads of money, apparently most of you do, but guess what, you should, you're all retired!!! I'm beginning to more and more NOT like this site, too many hateful people here...

Re: Not able to finish truck, should I part out or sell as is? Please don't delete post
If you sell off the parts, I doubt you would sell everything, so be prepared to take things to the recycle yard, or the dump. I bought my truck for $600 in good running condition of Craigs List. So if you expect to get more than $400 for something someone would need to trailer, you have some high hopes.
You could make $1000 or more selling off the parts, but it would be a huge pain and my guess would be that it would take you at least 6 months to find buyers for everything. I bought a set of hood hindges for $15, sand blasted and powder coated them (took about an hour and less than $1 worth of powder) and sold them for $75. If you strip/prep/prime a lot of stuff, you would make more of each part than just posting dirty/rusty/old looking parts as well. Best of luck. |

#1 your post SHOULD have been deleted by the mods...its against the rules. #2 you shouldn't ask for opinions if you don't want to hear them. and all the things you said you had plans for...well they sound great and I have done all that to my truck....about 12 thousand dollars to do it and 3 years.
Sell your truck the way it is and get what you can for it. And mods....don't cha think this thread is ready for a lock down....it's going no where positive. |
