Y-tube to Dual

I've been thinking about this for a long time. Let me know what you guys think, if I should make any changes.
Right now, I have the stock Y-tube exhaust, cat, and a glass pack muffler.

I want to change it to dual exhaust, so I'm thinking of getting some shorty headers, heading out to the junkyard and getting an old dual exhaust pipe system off of a similar chevy, buying a CAT and another muffler, then having a muffler or weld shop weld it all together for me. Then hopefully, I can get this thing a little better gas mileage

Also, anyone know if there is a carb that will bolt on in place of my Rochester 4BBL? Preferrebly an Edelbrock or something. I hear that you have to replace the intake manifold, but if there are any options before doing that, I'd option for them first.

Thanks

Re: Y-tube to Dual

well i got fake duals right now. i have hooker headers running o a y pipe going through a cat then a flowmaster 50 series muffler then out two pipes out the back. However i can not bolt on my square reciver hich cause the pipes are too close. ahh well. As for the carb you can buy the adapter plate and throttle linkage from edlebrock. then there is no need to change maniold. not sure what mod,le to look for

sorry wish i had better pics of the exhaust system and i too wish i had true duals but i don't have that kind of money right now

Nothing is really "wrong" with it. It's just old, and I hear that these new ones will up your mileage. I used to get about 15mpg, but now that's dropped to roughly 10. I've done hours and hours of locating the problem, and it keeps coming back to the carb.

I did the Hooker manifold kit on my '87 swb and it was a little more problematic. I ended up going to the local parts store for a new piece of pipe and having to cut down the pipes that came with the kit a bit more than they said you would have to. A trip to an exaust shop to have them re-flare the pipe ends and everything was good.
But this was on a manual transmission truck that had an odd shaped tranny x-member.

Square bore(ala eddelbrock, holley) aint gonna up it unless something is wrong with the q-jet(spread bore).......Headers and plugs(didnt really need em but changed em while we were working on it) neted about 3 mpg

Re: Y-tube to Dual

If it's a Q-jet, it shouldn't cost more than $150 to get it rebuilt locally (mine was ~$125, but that was 4 or 5 years ago), and a Q-jet will give you better mileage and driveability than the rest, without giving up any power. Not to mention it's probably already calibrated for your engine.

Re: Y-tube to Dual

A Quadrajet better than a new Edelbrock? I can see that it would be calibrated for my engine.

I'm not saying you're wrong, cause I sure don't know...but why would everyone buy edelbrocks and holleys if they weren't as good?

Re: Y-tube to Dual

Q jets are good carbs once rebuilt and if you like preformance, the prefomance jetting can help. I have found them to be a great carb as long as they are full of gas. They are nice but i prefer my edelbrock. It gives me more of the "feel in your seat" plus my edelbrock is easy to tune and in 2 years i have not had to do a re adjust on it runs just as the day i put it on. i have heard holly carbs require more tunning? but i have never owned one. I very much like my edelbrock over my old rebuilt q jet which was starting to leak agian

They get Holleys because they are great.... If you drag race.
If you plan to drive the vehicle longer than 1320feet and want good gas mileage, and want a carb, Q-jet is the best.
