Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
I've been looking for a posi unit to put into my truck. I've been really interested in the Powertrax line. They make the Lock Right locker and the Powertrax limited slip. Does anyone have either of these in their trucks. I know the limited slip would be the best route, but the Lock Right is much cheaper. Since I will only be driving my truck on the street, I wanted to see how harsh the locker is compared to the limited slip.
Thanks |

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
Ive had both.
The Power Trax no-slip unit is much better for street use. It does click once in a while durring a sharp turn and you feel the wheels grab with a slight chirp once in a while before it unlocks but it's something anyone with performance in mind can live with very easily. The Lock Right, is much better suited for off road or 4x4 use only. It can be used on the street but it clicks like a bad CV joint durring every turn every time. It pops durring turns and once in a while it will make this whopow sound and it feels like you lost your drive train. According to Richmond thats normal for this unit on the street. I ordered the no-slip last time and got the lock right instead. I figured what the heck it cant be much different then the noslip that was in the truck before. I only had the lock right in for 2 months now it sits in a box at the shop. The No-slip in my Firebird has seen duity for 4 years and was in my Camaro before its life was ended by an suv driver.

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
hey thanks for the input
So the lockright makes clicking and whoping sounds, but is it just the noise or can you feel it everytime you turn too. My exhaust is pretty loud, so if it is just the noise it may not be that bad. |

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
I donlt know about bigger rears, but the powertrax I had in a V8 S10 made an awful lot of noise and blew up in less than a month. I think it had a lot to do with the size of the unit, the one for a 7.5 inch 10 bolt is tiny (they take the place of the spider gears) so one for a bigger differential probably would be better off.

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
I know a fellow that has a Powertrax no-slip unit in his 99 Chevy and it has successfully survived about 2 1/2 years of road use and city driving. He says that there is a clicking noise in turns and every now and then a chirp on the tires, but it works great in winter and is good for pulling his boat. He has a really big boat!
I have limited slip Eaton units in my trucks and I like them. The 84 has over 200,000 mile on it's rear end gears. I just put one in my 91 Silverado daily beater. |

The bird has a 7.5 10 bolt in it as well and it's been fine although alot of the other guys over at TGO have had problems with thier no slip units breaking. I beleive most were caused by install issues or hard acceleration on tight corners. If you hit the gas hard while the teeth are sliping in a tight turn it eats the crap out of them and when you come out of the turn and they get back in sync they hit hard. If the teeth are lined up and locked in a straight line posistion like at the track it should be as solid as a spool. You also must remeber with a 7.5 the rear ends flex alot and if the axle tubes arent at least welded there will be alot of twisting in every direction especailly in one spot. That happens to be where the axles meet in the carrier.

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
I haven't heard much about the Powertrax units to see if they hold up or not , but you make it sound like a regular posi might be the way to go. Do you know of any of the guys that the Powertrax broke on, did it cause the rearend to lock up and bust their trannies or any other catastrophic damage?

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
I had a Lock-Rite in my 76 Landcruiser FJ40. It was great for off road but in a short wheelbase(90 inches) it was bad in corners making the clicking and banging noise. The Landcruisers used large rear ends, like 8.8 inch or slightly bigger, it never broke or wore down. With it installed I hardly ever needed to put it in four wheel drive.

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
A friend of mine has a powertrax in his Chevelle. It has a 496 BBC and runs 11's with slicks. He has had no problems with it in the last two years and drives it hard!!!

Re: Anyone have a Powertrax installed?
I have a Lock-Rite in my truck and I love it. No clicking or anything. Piece of cake to install. I am pushing close to 600 HP (BBC 468) with 3.73 gears. Nothing like laying some rubber with a posi.
