Difference between GMC and Chevy?
Stupid question here, but I guess most of my questions are stupid
Anyways, I’ve heard a few times a GMC is more “heavy duty” than a Chevy. Is there any truth in that statement??? They certainly look the same to me. Any input would be greatly appreciated! |

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
My dad always said "A GMC is a Chevy - with Lock Washers..."
He was also under the mistaken inpression that 67 and up GMC C & K Series where made of heavier gauge metal than the Chevy's. Curb Weights say different. - Dave

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
That’s what I always thought, however, I met this one truck enthusiast that swore up and down that a GMC is “better” than a Chevy. He said that a GMC actually weighs a couple of hundred pounds more than a Chevy I’ve actually heard a few other people make similar statements, but coincidently, they all drove GMC’s. I always kind of figured it was some kind of “sales gimmick” that they were told when they bought their trucks. I’m actually looking into buying a 1984 GMC to replace my 1980 Chevy and was wondering if there was any truth in it. |

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
Funny, this triggered a memory from when I was a kid. My parents bought a GMC S-15 Jimmy (must've been about 1986 or so). My mom said the salesman told them the frame was stronger on the GMC than the Chevy.... Anything to make a sale, I guess.
And for the record, that Jimmy was the biggest POS I've ever seen.

That’s pretty much what I was thinking I would like to do this to most car salesmen: |

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
HA ha ah i am almost 100% that the only diffrance is the grill and emblems. I always like the GMC name better just because they are only trucks and you see chevys every were. but seeing as how most were built atthe same plants i would say they are the same

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
Some trivia too...
F@rd claims to be the #1 selling truck (brand) in America. BUT, if you add GMC & Chevy together - The blue oval cannot even come close!!! FYI

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
The only differences is the emblems and the grilles. They all came down the same assembly line, just as they do now.

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
You know, I heard that a long time ago too. I wonder why GM doesn't come out and say something to that affect?

Re: Difference between GMC and Chevy?
On the sales figures, I remember eading that ford does sell more than gmc and chevy together.
In my understanding, gmc usually had better options, and base models were usually better equipped. The one example that comes to mind is early 90's work trucks. Most chevy did not have tilt, cruise and sliding glass, many gmc did. Oh, gmc usually sticker for more.
