What are the differences between a 68 c10 396 and a 68 Camaro 396 , i know the hp ratings are 310 / truck , 325 / car ( stock ) , is it just heads or heads and pistons ? Or other ??
Thanks .............................. Doug.

Probably Cam

Depends on what the Car motor was optioned as - they had 375 Horse 396 Car motors - with Squareport Heads, 11.5:1 or something like that.

Re: 396 Truck vs Car - What engine differences

You will see on the heads "Truck" on the truck block. Typically the valves are smaller on the truck engines and will most likely also have a different cam, intake and carb. The 396, 402, and 427 came in trucks and they are NOT high performance big blocks in the same vane as car hi-performance engines despite the fact that they are cast as "hi-performance". This does not mean that they are not capable but will need some significant rework to get there. This is not the same case as the 350 small blocks are they are really quite the same when looking at the base model.

Isn't the deck height taller on a truck block? I thought they were 1/4 inch taller and you had to have adaptors to put a car 4 barrel intake on them.

only on BIG trucks - bigger than 1-ton. Busses and C-50's etc had "Tall Deck 427's"

easiest way to tell the differance is to look @ the waterpump mounting location - if it is real close to the deck then it is a "Standard Deck" if there is a pretty large gap between the top of the w.p. mounting hole and the deck it is the "Tall Deck"

Huck is right - but it really isn't that hard to coax good HP out of a Truck motor - Cam Change, Intake, Carb, Headers.

I know someone who had a stock mid 70's 454 truck motor in a '79 Malibu and it would lift the left front wheel

yeh - left side of the motor pulls up - look @ a drag car - the drivers side usually comes off the ground first right????? (i.e. the left side - that is the driver's side)

?? - looks like the left front tire to me - ??

Really? Because a have a non-original 396 in my burb (was a factory 396 truck, but #'s don't match). So where will it say truck? It's a healthy motor and I've been wondering if it might be out of a car.

Don't the Big Block light truck engines have 4 bolt mains until the mid or early 70's?

Re: 396 Truck vs Car - What engine differences

O.K. i know the heads are different, smaller valves , etc . But what i was kinda wanting to know is did GM just bolt truck heads on a pretty much stock 325hp car motor ? Are the pistons the same as a car ?? I was thinking of bolting the 98cc close chamber heads on the truck motor , cam change , strip dominator / race demon carb and call it done , lol . Maybe i'm trying to be a little too cheap .

Re: 396 Truck vs Car - What engine differences

i cant vouch for the originality of my motor parts but both sets of bbc heads i have and the block i have say high perf pass and pass. the motor came from a 77 burban and it is peanut heads, after the muscle cars of the 60s no chevy car got a bbc, right?? so pass my ass. my date stamped 72 oval ports say pass and also came on a 73 chevy 1t.

"truck" blocks are better called tall decks and came in 366 and 427. they are .400 taller. they also use a 4 ring piston.

Re: 396 Truck vs Car - What engine differences

I bought a 427 Tall Deck off a fellow board member. Since then I have done some reserch and found a 525 stroker kit for about $1900.00 and talked to one of the best Chevy Guru's around my old stompin' grounds and he said that 502 & 572 heads would work on that block, you just have to modify the head gasket for the water jackets. Can you say "MOUNTAIN MOTOR". I also have a built 396 (1969 Chevelle SS block) with 454 open chamber high perf. heads (1970 Chevelle SS) ported and polished, shaved, bigger valves and roller rockers. With all the goodies the builder put in it, he told me I should be at 500+ H.P.. That one is going in my '71 SS Project Truck.

Re: 396 Truck vs Car - What engine differences

I just went and dug out my parts books , 62-72 chevy , i forgot i had the truck one as well , laid 'em out side by side and the only difference part nbr wise was the heads . Piston , cam , intake and ex valves all had the identical part numbers. Maybe it is just the head , less compression than a car , that might explain the 325 hp / car , 310 hp / truck.
