Looked at an 87 today

Guy wants $6500 for a pretty nice '87 1/2 ton. Runs and drives great. Few flaws. Crack in seat, broken trim inside. Recent paint job is good but not the best. He said he thought it had a 305, but I am not sure. How can you tell the difference at a glance. I thought the intake looked wider than my 350. Also, the valve covers looked just like the ones on my '98. I thought the original on an '87 was different.
What do you think? Worth it?

Re: Looked at an 87 today

Around here that would be a high price. Without pics, and not knowing how prices are where you live, it is hard to say.

The 305 and 350 use the same size intake. I don't know any way to tell them apart without looking up the numbers on the back of the engine. They are cast into the block beside the distributor. You can look them up on mortec.com. BTW, my 305 had the number 305 cast into the side of the block in numbersabout an inch tall, but I have heard that is a little unusual. I think it was on the driver's side, but I am not sure.

An '87 should have center bolt valve covers. That was the first year for them. It should also be fuel injected.

I've heard there's no way to tell the difference between the 305 & 350 w/o looking up the numbers.

Re: Looked at an 87 today

Other than dual glasspacks and tinted windows I think it is completely stock. Unless something has been done to the engine that I don't know about. I thought the price was a little high myself. I may try to get him to trade on my '65 Mustang. I didn't get any pics. Maybe I can tomorrow.
