Bought another one - 1971 C20 !!!

Well, found a truck we just had to get. It is a one owner 1971 C20 with only 91,000 acual miles. Was sitting for about a year, transmission was toasted, was told 350 motor was good but it had a spun rod bearing. Timing chain went out and was replaced at some time and all the pieces were in the oil pump screen, might have caused the rod problem.

It was pretty dirty as the pictures tell, but looked pretty solid overall, the cab is one of the best Iowa cabs I have seen. Inner rockers and cab supports are intact, a few holes in the cab corners and it will need rockers some time, just a few holes, and some repair minor repair under the vents near the floor. Battery got the inner fender and fender cup, but not to bad overall. Has a solid wood bed floor, but tailgate is pretty abused.

Have some pics here of it sitting in the shed, pics of myself, my sons and the original owner, and some engine/trans removal pics. We spent a lot of time just cleaning everthing and fixing some things. Will post some after the fixup pics later. What do you think of her ???

Here are a few after pics: It's road ready, all cleaned up, put in spare engine we had, tranny was really wasted, so found another tranny and rebuilt that. More details later.

WOW. How long did it take? Did you do as thorough job with this as you are doing with the Green Machine?

No - LOL - this is the progress at the 3 week mark, just replaced the engine and rebuilt the tranny, fixed the brakes (new master cyl) and leaking PS box, fixed alternator and starter, got all the lights working, and spent many, many hours with the power washer getting all the grease and dirt/mud off of it. Took all of the interior except dash stuff out for cleaning and put in a good spare seat we had. Remove door panels to flush any crud out in there. Removed the old ugly rear bumper and put on a used sport bumper, 2 used tires and wheels for the front and painted the rims. Waxed inside and out.

It appears to have the original front shocks and maybe the rears too but they all work ok yet ??!!! It will need a new muffler and taipipe, maybe whole exhaust some time.

It is far from perfect but a decent driver now. It would likely not get get a full frame off, as that is not really needed yet on this one. Some body work and new paint and it would be pretty good I think, maybe rebuild the old 350 engine some time.

Oh - and many thanks to my two sons who worked their tails off getting this cleaned up and fixed, and to my wife and daughter who put up with our mechanical adventures.

That is what I need to find. a good old 3/4 ton that would clean up and not break the bank that I could pull my trailers with. Nice Truck.

Re: Bought another one - 1971 C20 !!!

Here are a few more pics, the pictures hide some of the small dents, the tailgate is worse than it looks, and the front bed panel is rusted out at the bottom, but still a pretty solid truck I think.

Re: Bought another one - 1971 C20 !!!

Just a few more - does it look like that front cab mount is squished ? The rubber is good, but it looks a little short to me, maybe something else to replace ???
