Steering column noise
My steering column on my 66 makes a weird noise that kind of sounds like a spring stretching out when turning left or right. Any ideas before I tear into it?

Re: Steering column noise
There is a bearing assembly in there that might be getting worn out. Do you get any movement out of the steering wheel like up and down or side to side? My 63 does the same thing.

Re: Steering column noise
No movement, just noise when you turn it. Guess I'll tear it apart today.

Re: Steering column noise
The noise was actually coming from a spring that is located just below the lower bearing (under the hood). I think it actually holds the bearing in. Under the hood on the upper part of the steering shaft there is a collar. I loosened the retaining bolt and slid the collar down and and the spring slid down out of the housing. I just put some heavy greese on the upper and lower contact surfaces of the spring and then put it all back like I found it. No more noise. I did notice that the bearings need to be replaced but that is another day.
