I'm sure there's a few of you who have added inline fuel fulters in your trucks as insurance for a newly rebuilt carb. I did on mine and it has clogged up twice now. I just pick one off the shelf. I used a 3 in by 1.5 inch one the first time and one twice that the 2nd time. This time I am going to try a clear plastic one. Hope to see what I catch! First time took a month to clog and the second a week. It will do it when you let the tank level drop. I need to empty it and clean it, but I was just wondering what people successfully use. -David

I've got an '89 burb w/ TBI and it has a "factory" inline fuel filter on the frame rail. I've never had a problem with it clogging. I replace it every couple of years.

The clear should help figure out what the problem is. If you have your old one why don't you cut it open??

I'm not sure how the pickups work, but I'm having trouble figuring out why it matters that the fuel level drops... seems like the pickup is fixed and is always sucking gas from the bottom of the tank...

or a better idea instead of taking the chance of a spark and it igniting....try running some gas or brake clean backwards through it onto a paper towel or a clean rag....

ok, so good point on the risks... I tend to probably take gas too lightly...

but how would you run gas or break clean backwards through it???

Yeah unless you have some great way to cut that thing open without risking a spark don't cut it open, it may blow up in your face, then you wouldn't be able to see what you catch in the plastic one either, or drive your truck for that matter!

Though if I'm careful I could use a hacksaw, but a roling pipe cutter would cut it open slowly and safely. I am just going to not use the second filter, and let the original one clog up, and it is an exposed one in the carburator. Its not clogging fast, though... its been over a week!

hmm that would sound like the tank has debreys in it or the lins. did you fill it up while a gas station was being refilled lately? when they refule they stir up sediment in the stations tanks

when the fuel level drops the fuel sloshes around a lot more stirring up all the crap in the bottom. when the tank has more in it its more stable. you need to just drop the tank and clean it out or get used to changing filters often. it doesnt take a whole of stuff to clog a filter

If your state has started using E-10 unleaded recently, it will break all of the debris in the system loose and plug the filter. If that is the case, it will get better in time, just keep changing the filter.
