Fender Welting

Has any one used the black rubber fender welting on a 67-72 stepside. I just don't remember seeing any trucks with it. I have the fenders off and have just had the bed and fenders painted and want something better than metal to metal.

I bought some of that a few years ago to use on my step side when I repainted. It looks nice but if I had to do it over, I don't know if I would use it again. The stuff was a bear to keep on while putting the fenders back on. I had to duck tape it fast while I fed the bolts through and it was tough getting it to strech around the curved parts. I have seen a few trucks without and look nice. It is only a thin strip of vinyl around a plastic hose the size of a pencil. I don't think it will matter metal to metal as long as it is painted surface to painted surface.

I just used some on my truck after painting it and I highly recommend it! It eliminates the metal to metal contact that will cause rust but more importantly, it keeps water, mud and whatever else from spraying up through. It gives the truck a nice "finished" look too.

The way I installed mine was to loosely install the fender with 2 bolts up in the middle. (out of the way) I then started at one end (the back end is where I chose to start) and slipped in the fender welting and punched the holes through with an ice pic as I went. Install each bolt loosely as you go to and it will hold it in place. Once all is in, tighten down all bolts.

It wasn't hard to do but you do need some patience so as to not rush the job.
