Air compressor died?

OK, its been raining here in La. for about a month straight now. Well, obviously, I'm running the defrost. Well out of NOWHERE this morning the windows start fogging REALLY bad, I thought maybe I was just an idiot or something, but sure enough, the vents aren't blowing cold air. Its actually a bit warm.

Tonight, same thing after work. And its all A/C settings, the compressor isn't even cutting on. Flip it to a setting and the compressor doesn't switch on. Is the HVAC bad? Has the compressor burned up? I've smelt a smidge of burning rubber for the past few weeks but there hasn't felt like a problem, figured it was just b/c the motor is running like arse and it smells wierd.

We did tighten the belt about a month ago because it was squealing but it isn't over-tightened at all. Did just tightening it kill the compressor?

Please help.

If the compressor is shot, will the A/C compressor from my parts truck 84 fit?

Re: Air compressor died?

Check you freon pressure, it won't come on without pressure. Check power to a/c clutch, if no power, start backtracing to see where you lose power.
There were 2 types of compressors in early eighties- short and long. I would assume both of your trucks have the long compressor, though the clutch pulley might be different. If it looks the same, it is.
Personally I would not install a used compressor on anything that the compressor only costs $100 or so on. Too much work and lost freon if it isn't good. If your comp is bad, take it as an opportunity to replace with new comp, flush system, install new drier, seals and oil and convert to 134. Just my$.02

Re: Air compressor died?

If you are checking the A/C for low freon, then go to the accumulator (Aluminum thing beside the heater core housing) and pull the plug off of the pressure switch. Now, with the A/C controls selected to A/C,take a wire and jumper the two contacts, in the plug and see if the A/C clutch engages. That is a good hint that the system is not FUBAR and the freon is just low. These trucks leak in three basic places, the compressor shaft, the hose ends--where they connect to the aluminum end pieces and the accumulator fittings.
