New member with Starter problems - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum so please forgive me if i'm doing this wrong.

I own a 1969 C-10 SB 350ci Auto. I've been driving it daily for 3 years and well a month ago it stopped cranking... turn the key and just the brake light ignites and a faint click.

I replaced the battery with an optima... faint click.
I replaced the the positive cable terminal .... faint click
I replaced the OEM starter with a new Mini ... faint click
I spliced in a new 12GA wire for large purple wire leading to the starter becasue it looked old and dry .... faint click
I spliced in a new wire for the yellow insulated wire leading to the starter ... faint click

I have an ACCEL HEI. I replaced the cap, the coil and put a new wire that leads to the firewall... faint click.

Now i'm tempted to replace the entire wire harness and ign switch.

Any suggestions? Whats the best way to see if the NEW starter is working?

disassemble ground wires clean all mating surfaces both ends of wire reassemble and try it out

The quickest way to check the starter is to jump the solenoid to the positive cable terminal. Use a short piece of 12 gauge wire and connect it to the purple wire terminal on the solenoid, the one nearest the block. Then touch it to the positive cable terminal on the solenoid. Be sure and put the truck out of gear and emergency brake on if it works. Do what Cdowns said and also clean the junction block terminal on the passenger fender well where the positive wire from the battery connects to the feed wire for the fuse block.
If the starter turns the engine over then you need to check the purple wire back to the key switch. October must be a bad month for starters cause I've seen more posts like yours than I can remember. Be sure and get back with us and let us know how you fixed the problem.

CHECK THE CONNECTORS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FENDER...
you will see a small black junction box on the passenger side fender by the battery...take apart and clean those two wires , if there lose or rusted you won't get it running...
hope this does it mark...
