The gas gauge in my 72 custom deluxe absolutley refuses to work. Its stuck at like a little over half a tank. I've had the cluster out numerous times and have installed aftermarket gauges for the bottom three and a tach in the middle. Im not sure if it has ever worked, i wanna say that it did before i took it out

but im not sure. Just looking for some advice on what to check/replace, thanks a lot. Shane

Did you check to see if it had a ground wire?I had to run a grd. when I changed out my cluster.

A factory ground wire hooked up? Or have to add one? Why would i if i just plugged it back in? I dont have any clue

One quick check you can do to see if it works is disconnect the single wire from the gas tank sending unit. The meter should go to full. If you short the wire from the sending until to ground, the meter should read empty.

A.P. is right just backwards. disconnect the power wire to the tank,the guage will fall to empty(no power),then ground the wire and the guage will read full.(do all this with the key on) If the guage does not change readings then you either have a bad connection(doubtful)or the guage is faulty.If the guage does change readings then the sending unit /float could be the culprit.-Sorry A.P. not trying to step on your toes!

check the resistance at the tank

check the resistance at the fuse box connection

check the resistance at the back of the cluster connector

it should be between 0-90

0-empty
90-full

Green Machine and A.P. you are both right, I just went and checked my 72 and you are right -MY SINCERE APOLOGY! My experience with troubleshooting fuel guage problems are from working on the old ford cars and trucks that I buy and sell. VERY SORRY AGAIN!
