Specifically want to hear from people using one in their 67-72 truck. How easy was installation? Any words of advice/experience that would be helpful?

I am buying one or the other at this point - was thinking about doing a tilt/telescopic one. Just curious to hear from others who are using one in their trucks...and wanted to get all this ironed out BEFORE buying and installing mine.

i went with ididit before i started the frame off. chrome, tilt, telescoping, came with the correct adapter for the wiring harness. it was a plug and play situation and took about 2 hrs to install in a running truck . i would buy one again . ive heard good things about the flaming river one too, i dont think you can lose either way . tom

I think I'm gonna go unpainted and paint it myself. You have a '71 so your e-brake setup isn't the same as mine ... My big questions right now is how much of the stock hardware is required for the install, and whether it is a direct bolt-up replacement. There are like ... 2 straps on the inside and 1 weird looking thing that strapped to the firewall side and had two bolts holding it in - was curious if that was also used with a FR or Ididit column.

Not sure if they have different models, but a friend of mine had a flaming river about 5 years ago and it was just plastic with a chrome shell around, and he wasnt happy with it

I like my flaming river I bought from Summit. Easy install. I did get a narrower shaft though so I needed to change the bottom seal.

Hehe, thanks Gregfull. I actually started a similar thread or at least asked Greasemonkey how he did his stuff a long time ago also, he told me, but I can't seem to find the thread. Will need to do that later.

I'm going to get tempted when I go to Summit superstore tomorrow, and I will probably end up buying one of the damned things, but ... we'll see if I can resist temptation. I was actually surprised at the price while I was there last time. With the setup like greasemonkey has, it's gonna set me back around $400. More money sunk into the pit

400 for the ujoints and intermittion shaft?

I am still not sure yet on that one. I am still working on the cooling system and need to buy some fans. Want to buy a barely used setup of LS1/LT1 fans?

(I'm gonna hafta find something else to use w/this new fan mounting plate!)

Hi again Shifty,
I couldn't remember all the different components by now, so I went and found the PM I sent you with the part numbers. The part numbers should still be good.

I bought the parts for the intermediate shaft from Summit racing. The shaft from the column is a 1" DD shaft, the intermediate shaft is 3/4" DD, and the steering box is 3/4" 36 spline. So you need two ujoints: 1" DD to 3/4" DD, and 3/4" DD to 3/4" 36 spline. I used one Flaming River ujoint, Summit part # FLA-FR2517DD and one Borgeson joint BRG-013449; I used the Borgeson because the Flaming River joint of 3/4" to 3/4" 36 spline did not fit on my steering box splines (it was just too tight for some reason, and I didn't want to force it). The shaft was a Flaming River FLA-FR1850, you just cut it to fit. The ujoints are a simple bolt on, no welding needed.

Flaming River columns are "stainless" and much better quality inside & out...there is no plastic or anything like that. Their columns are designed after our truck style columns, so they look much better in our trucks! Period.

I almost always have one made up and ready to go for our trucks, specifically...in stock...polished/chrome & brushed.
