Please Help - Electrical Gremlins - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey members, I had no electrical problems until after having engine pulled and reinstalled. Then the charging system did not work. Appeared coil was over heating so tach wire disconnected. Then the ignition switch would not kill the engine. Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated.

External regulator?
HEI?
Old wiring harness?
Did you do the R&R yourself or some shop?

Did you put all the ground strapes back on it. Valve cover ground, block ground, motor ground, body ground. If not you need to.

68/Andy-
Internal regulator.
Non-HEI.
Old wiring harness.
Shop did the R&R.
Will check the ground straps.

Run a check on your alternator. It's free at some auto parts chains.
Also go thru the wiring harness from the bulkhead connector all the way out to the headlight grounding leads at the end and inspect all the connections. Dress them up bright with a small thin file, zap out the female connections with a tech spray, and dab a minute amount of silicone dielectric grease on the male lead before reconnecting. While it's apart run a continuity check from the pin on the bulkhead connector to the ternimal on each line's end. You should find any opens [breaks in the line]that way. If not, at least then you'll know there's no more corrosion and everything's connected right. I don't trust shops.
Also after 34 years some of the copper strands in the original harness may have gotten brittle. I was reconnecting the yellow lead to my coil (points set- up) on my 292 L6 in the '68 Stepside, and 4" of the end came off in my hand!
M&H Wiring makes a perfect, American made, set of wiring harnesses for these trucks. They're not cheap, but they are perfect.

Hey 68, thanks for the follow up info. I plan to start with the alternator and work through your recommendations this weekend. Hopefully I will isolate the issue sooner than later and a new harness will not be required. Thanks again and I will let you know what I find.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
