Throttle rod and plug wires

I am looking for ideas here on how to solve this little problem I made for myself when I dropped in my HEI. If I hit the gas the throttle rod hits the plug wires for #s 5 and 7. Any ideas on how to move these out of the way?

Thanks

Re: Throttle rod and plug wires

How about either making a new throttle rod, or modifying it. Making it bend our father away from the carb, and farther away from the wires.

Can't you get swome more slack in the wires, so they will just lay down a little more?

Re: Throttle rod and plug wires

I would recommend a good set of wire looms such as "made for you" since they have a seperator block that you install near the distributor to effectively flatten the wires, making routing easy. I bought a set a couple years ago, and will never buy anything else. they're installed on all my vehicles.

also i would suggest getting a set of universal wires (brand of your choice), so you can cut them to the exact lenght you will need to clear any obstructions.

Made for you website

Could you just use a holder like this to keep them together and out of your way

I tried that but they wires wont stay down. HMMM I wonder if one of those wire looms that bolt to the valve cover bolt would work if I bent it and put it on the last intake bolt on the drivers side.

Ewwwww.....a Q-jet.

Lol, sorry....I had the same problem. I took off the factory 2brrl, intake, and factory distributor and threw them all in the street. Then I did the HEI, Holley Street Avenger, and Weiand intake(now an Edelbrock Performer RPM).

Bein a 70 I got that ugly linkage style throttle too, I had to bend mine up to get past the high rise intake, then the PEDAL up the I could get full travel on the carb. I dont recall havin any problems with the plug wires though.....compared to mine and my buddies, your looks flatter then ours. Has it ever been bent before?

Re: Throttle rod and plug wires

I like the qjet comment I got that throttle rod when I got the carb which came off of a 68 3/4 ton 327. As far as I know it has never been bent. My truck originally had a 307 in it and I believe I have the rod for that but will have to go look.

Re: Throttle rod and plug wires

Ok I dug up the old rod. It is 14 inches long. The one that came with the qjet is 16 inches long. Also if you look at the pic you will see on the longer one there is a flange on it that is not on the shorter one. I also noticed something tonight. If I put that flange piece toward the back where the pedal assembly goes then it clears the wires. However the piece that I have to put it in place wont work cause of that flange Figures. So here is the question. How is a qjet throttle rod supposed to be hooked up? Which end goes where?

Thanks

Re: Throttle rod and plug wires

The adjustable end should go to the front, to make adjusting the length easier. Also, so nothing sticks out the back to hit firewall. Just my $.02.

Re: Throttle rod and plug wires

I made my rod from threaded rod and some female heim joints. I then covered the threaded rod with some aluminum tubing and presto, looks like a solid high end throttle rod without the cost. All materials from your local hardware store.
