pertronix or hei?

are the pertronix units anywhere near close as efficient and reliable as an hei? the reason i am asking is because i have a 70 3/4 ton 4x4 im building. and i bought an hei for it so i could do away with the points, but it looks like it will be a real tight fit with the firewall. so i was thinking of maybe running a pertronix unit. if the pertronix are good the does anyone have a kit layin around to sell or maybe have a part number for the one i need?

MSD Is a better choice...... Petronix is reported by many to be not so good!!!

Re: pertronix or hei?

i have issues with it being a little close to the firewall, just makes the cap a little hard to get off. how about looking at one of the remote mount coil setups, with the directional wire caps?

Re: pertronix or hei?

OK.. I read it as which one would be better... a conversion, or HEI...
My opinion is, HEI, the main reason is that you can get parts anywhere any day and not have to special order anything.
If you turn it in the right direction, it'll clear with a little room to spere. You can slide the engine forward almost a 1/2 inch with no mods if need be.

Re: pertronix or hei?

My Mallorey HEI does everything but touch my firewall with an Edelbrock intake. Close but it works, I have a K-10 with 327 SBC in it. I also looked into the Crane conversion ($70) but went with the whole new HEI instead.

Re: pertronix or hei?

I had the Pertronix conversion kit in a 68 Impala. Drove it off and on for a couple years with no problems.

Re: pertronix or hei?

I have HEI on my K10 and have ran it in a K20. It's a tight fit, but it will work. I have also ran Pertronix. I didn't really care for the ignitor because it had a delay of a couple seconds before it would activate. The ignitorII doesn't use the delay.

Re: pertronix or hei?

New cab mounts help with HEI clearance too. Usually the front mounts use the mounts plus an additional 1/8 thick square washer on top. Every little bit helps.

Re: pertronix or hei?

I had the pertronix dizzy with the Ignitor II in it. Worked for about 14-15 months then I noticed it was hard to start. I put in a HEI and my truck has never started so fast in its life.

I put a Pertronix in my 1972 and it was a relatively painless process and has been 100% reliable. The only issue I had is that it took a bit of messing around to get the right clearance for the stator which bolts to the bottom of the advance - and if this isn't done then you have problems. An ignition-hot voltage source is also required; I cheated and ran a wire directly from the fuse box, but I'll be replacing that with a Painless Wiring Cirkit Boss system this winter sometime to have ignition hot for other stuff.

The P/N I installed was Summit PNX-1181.

I really like the unit, it was a quick install and I get to use the standard cap, etc.

Re: pertronix or hei?

I have a 74 corvette and the tachometer drives off a cable from the distributer so I wanted to keep the distributor but ditch the points. I talked to every street rodder and muscle car guy I could find who had changed to the pertronix units and nobody had anything bad to say about them. I bought the pertronix II but have not installed it yet. I'm concentrating on the truck which has the HEI conversion. I think that if I had the choice I would go with the HEI units, but those small Distributor caps look pretty slick.IMO
