Here is my plan, tell me what you think.

Poor mans rest-o job.

I have light surface rust in places on my truck and 2 dime sized holes in my driver rocker. pin hole in the collector on the header. I washed the truck in comet the other day and took the top layer of oxidation off, it looks good so For Christmas I am going to get myslef time for the following.

in this order

Pull bumpers and sand the inside and put Grey Por 15 on them to stop/slow the rust.

Sand the surface rust to smooth where it is the worst.

Compound the truck

Go get 2 spray cans of matched paint from the paint store.

Spray the sanded parts (do I need to prime them?)

use POR15 filler on the 2 rocker holes, (its not bad to bondo if you know where it is to replace it later.)

Spray the inner and outer rockers to match just like the other places

Spray the door tops where my arm hangs out to match replace felt.

Then (and here is the part I do not know) Take a really really fine sand paper an lightly sand the painted spots to blend.

then wipe down and Wax the car. (whats the best wax on onestep?)

Somewhere in here I will use exaust putty that was recomended on another post to stop the header noise and then shoot it to match with the VHT high temp paint.

So what do you think?? Any input from you guys is appreciated. while I am at it I will probably go along the bottoms of the truck where the inner and outer pannels meet and do some light sanding and preventive paint.... just to keep the rust drips on the driveway to a min.

PICs of the truck are here, I think it will come pretty clean.

Yes you need to prime what ever spots you sand before painting.
The exhaust putty will last between 1 and 2 weeks before the hole comes back. Brazing is about the best thing to do on that.
Zymol is a good one coat wax but I'm sure everyone has their favorite.
Even the best bodymen use some sort of bondo. just don't get excessive with it.
That is a nice looking truck you have.

Re: Here is my plan, tell me what you think.

If you have a dime hole or pin hole in your rockers, they are just about gone. The hole is where the rust was most aggressive...the rest of the rocker is very thin as well. It will be so thin that you will hardly be able to weld to it...ask me how I know! Don't count on a bondo or filler fix to last longer than a year. You will get blisters under the new paint and more rust holes. Remember...as the saying goes...RUST NEVER SLEEPS!

If you can get the paint to match go for it. I reconmend getting the spray can trigger handle, Walmart use to have them for 98 cents. It makes painting easier and doesn't get paint on or make your thumb sore.
