Question about 71 K10
My swb K10 didnt have a transfer case in it when I got it.It had a sm465 tranny and a I-6 if that matters.I think it would have came with the np 205.Did the 71 K10's only have the np 205 or did they also have the rockwell T221 in them?My 69 has the rockwell but I thought I heard they didnt come with the rockwells after 69 or 70.Am I right?
Sorry if this isnt in the right section but I thought the knowledge of original equipment would be more here than the 4x4 section.. Last edited by 1969k10stepside; 11-15-2006 at 07:50 PM. |

Re: Question about 71 K10
I think the 203 is for the trucks w/ out the lockouts.Maybe I do need to ask in the 4x4 section..I will wait and see if I get an answer.

Re: Question about 71 K10
Is there a 202? I know it's NOT a 205, I've got one of those behind a TH350 for comparison.

Re: Question about 71 K10
To the best of my knowledge, only 205s were available in 71 and 72.
The 203 came shortly after that. Then the 208 after that. In 71s and 72s I've personally seen a 205 behind a th400 (not original), a th350, a 4-speed manual (I know there are many different 4-speeds but I can't tell them apart), and a 3-speed manual. I have only seen 203s in newer (1973+) trucks, and 208s in trucks newer than that. A friend had a 203 in a 78 truck. On the freeway at 70 mph it decided to lock up. The front drive shaft came through the floor and landed in the seat next to him. Another friend who shoes horses for a living has had many folks with 208s and other aluminum case transfer cases come to him with holes in the side of the case from a rock. If you are looking for a transfer case, stick with a 205 behind the transmission you want. Make sure you get the transmission, adapter, and transfer case from a single donor. This will make your job much easier.

Re: Question about 71 K10
The manual trans also came with the 205 TC though I don't know if having an I6 makes any difference. I doubt it. The 208 did not come along until 73.

Re: Question about 71 K10
I would say a 205 in this application. Even my 70 GMC 3/4 4x4 six cylinder suburban uses a 205 T/C.
I've had a few 4x4 and last I see the Rockwells is in 1969 and mostly in the GMC in that year. My 70 Blazer 6 cyl 4x4 has a Dana 20 and a 3 speed on column thats a standard tranny.

Re: Question about 71 K10
Well,I found a 208 out of a blazer for $150-I think I will pass on that.
I found a 203 but I dont want to put in the kit so it will work w/ lockouts I have a sm465 bolted to a rockwell but I am wanting to keep them together for another truck. I think I will just keep searching here, junkyards, and ebay for one and hope I find one cheap.I wont need it for awhile so I have some time to search. Thanks for all the responses Dustin Last edited by 1969k10stepside; 11-15-2006 at 11:52 PM. |

Re: Question about 71 K10
I agree with the above that 69 would be the last year you will find the Rockwell and the 203 would not have been available until after the 67-72 years.
