T-5 gurus help!
I need advice on installing my T-5. It's out of an '88 S-10 and while trying to mount it on the bellhousing I discovered what I think is the input shaft collar is too long. It's alot longer than the Saginaw 3 speed I have, but yet the overall length from the mounting point to the tip is within about 1/4". It appears that the collar hits the clutch disc and so the trans is about 2" from bolting up. What do I do now??? Has anyone else run into this?
Brad

Re: T-5 gurus help!
Take a look at the tech tip pages at inliners.org Here is a quote from one of the articles "Some simple mods will need to be done to the tranny. Ream or drill the 4 mounting holes to open them up from the metric size to half inch. You will notice the input shaft, the pilot part of the shaft and the front bearing retainer are longer than the stock tranny's. I cut about 1/4 of an inch off the pilot to match the stock one. This still leaves the overall length of the shaft a little long but was not a problem. You can drive the pilot bushing in further if it does interfere. I also cut the bearing retainer to match one from a stock tranny."
They have been an excellent resource for I6 info. Good to see another six banger fan, good luck

Re: T-5 gurus help!
Thanks 67, I've been on there and Stovebolt but they leave a little to be desired with there writeups on this matter, especially with my prediciment. I'll probably cut the 1/4" off the end of the shaft, but that won't help with my problem.
Ok, I've been doing a little more research and it looks like it is in fact the bearing retainer is too long. Anyone know how much I should cut it- on second thought I can just take a look at my Saginaw and do the math myself. Can I just use a hacksaw and a fairly straight cut or should I really take this to a machine shop? Also, will the shaft itself be splined farther up or does it pretty much stop at the end of the bearing retainer? I'm really trying to do this on the cheap so any extra expense I'd like to keep at bay. So far this has only cost me $110, gas, and time.

Re: T-5 gurus help!
Here's my saga regarding the T-5 if anyone is interested. I'll probably do a writeup and post it here in FAQ as well when I'm done.
